# Insurance Licenses and Requirements This document outlines various insurance licenses and requirements in Texas. ## License Types and Requirements Here's a summary of the different license types and their associated requirements: * **Emergency License:** The individual must prove the emergency license is necessary for preserving the agency's assets. It's valid for 90 days within a 12-month period. * **Surplus Lines License:** Required if an agent wants to place insurance with non-admitted insurers lacking a Certificate of Authority. * **Managing General Agent (MGA) License:** Required for individuals supervising field operations for insurers, along with underwriting authority. * **Risk Manager License:** Issued to individuals who evaluate risks for clients seeking property & casualty insurance. They provide advice on reducing loss risks. * **Adjuster:** A person who investigates and settles claims on behalf of an insurer. Adjusters typically work directly for the insurer, not individual agents. * **Appointment:** A person selling insurance needs an appointment from an insurer. If a producer wants to sell for a second insurer, only one appointment request is needed. ## Continuing Education * **License Expiration:** Insurance licenses in Texas expire after 2 years (24 months). * **Continuing Education Requirements:** To maintain a license, producers must successfully complete continuing education before the license expiration date. The minimum requirement is 24 hours. 50% of the continuing education must be completed in a classroom setting (12 hours). An additional 3 hours must cover ethics. * **Experience Exemption:** Individuals who have held their license for 20 consecutive years are exempt from these continuing education requirements. ## Penalty for Non-Compliance Failure to complete the required hours of continuing education before the expiration date results in a penalty. The penalty is $50 per hour with a maximum of $500 per license. Licensees have 90 days to complete any outstanding requirements after the license expiration date.
