# Periodic Table Elements Quiz **1) What is the periodic table and what does it contain?** The periodic table contains elements. These are the basic building blocks of all other substances. An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into something simpler. **How is the periodic table organized?** * **Columns (or groups):** These run vertically. Elements in the same group have similar properties and are grouped together. Some of these groups have specific names. * **Periods (also called rows):** These run horizontally. The periodic table is divided into 3 main categories: metals, metalloids, and non-metals. **Categories of Elements:** * **Alkali Metals:** Shiny, silvery, soft, and highly reactive. * **Alkaline Earth Metals:** Shiny, silvery, but not as soft or reactive as alkali metals. * **Transition Metals:** Shiny, silvery, and vary in hardness and strength. Often used for jewelry and building materials. * **Metalloids (staircase):** Have properties of both metals and non-metals. Often solid at room temperature and can conduct electricity. * **Lanthanides and Actinides:** Radioactive and can have weak magnetic properties. * **Halogens:** Non-metals that are very reactive. They can exist in different states depending on the element. * **Noble Gases:** Non-metals that are unreactive and stable. They produce colored light when excited by energy, like in neon signs. **Other Information:** The periodic table can display additional information about elements. * Elements grouped together have similar/special properties. * Periods or rows tell us about the element properties on a horizontal scale. * Elements in categories (metal, non-metal & metalloid) have different properties categorized in a meaningful way. * Elements are also shown how reactive they are or how strongly they can react to other elements or substances. * Some elements exhibit radioactivity.
