# Real Communication Book ## Chapter 1: Communication: Essential Human Behavior ### Book Notes - Are most communication behaviors inborn & entirely natural? - Effective communicator skills must be learned - Good communicators never stop learning - Speaking well is more important than listening - Communication is a two-way street - Even if you're talking to yourself, listening is a crucial part of the process - Communication challenges exist in every relationship (personal & professional) - Becoming more literate benefits physical & emotional health - In order to become effective communicators, we must understand how our communication choices affect others & why others' choices affect us - We must communicate. Functions essential to living. - Communication functions to help (or not) us accomplish our goals in personal, group, organizational, public, or technologically mediated situations - Communication serves more than one primary function: - Expressing affiliation - Managing relationships - Influencing others ### Expressing Affiliation - Affiliation: a feeling of connectedness you have with others - Can be expressed verbally or non-verbally - i.e., hugs - Does talking = effective communication? - Talking isn't effective on its own. We must be thoughtful about what we say, use listening skills, and use appropriate nonverbal behaviors - Do body movements or language constitute a language? - Nonverbal behaviors are important and useful in effective communication than verbal communication (body language) - Is interpreted in different ways, so it isn't a true language - If people mean well, does that mean they will communicate well? - Words don't mean anything if communication behaviors don't reinforce them - Example: empty compliments
