# Infection Process This diagram outlines the different processes involved in bacterial and viral infections. ## Bacterial Infection * **Infection:** The initial bacterial infection. * **Activation of LB:** Activation of a specific immune component, likely a type of leukocyte (white blood cell). * **Recognition of Ag:** Recognition of the antigen (Ag), a substance that triggers an immune response. * **Production of Ac:** Production of antibodies (Ac) that specifically target the bacterial antigen. * **Formation of Ag-Ac complex:** The combining of the antigen and antibody to form a complex. * **Phagocytosis of the complex:** The complex is engulfed and destroyed by the immune system. ## Viral Infection * **Infection:** The initial viral infection. * **Activation of LT:** Activation of another immune component, likely a different type of lymphocyte (LT). * **Recognition of the infected cell:** The infected cell is recognized. * **Attachment to the cell:** The virus attaches to the infected host cell. * **Release of lethal substances:** The virus releases substances that are lethal to the infected cell. * **Death of the infected cell:** The infected cell dies. ## Common Steps in both Bacterial and Viral Infections * **Infection:** Initiation of the infection, either bacterial or viral. * **Recognition of attacker (Pathogen):** Detection of the infectious agent by immune system cells involved in the process. * **Follow-up** : the specific follow up after pathogen recognition. **Note:** LB and LT likely refer to types of lymphocytes, and Ag and Ac are abbreviations for antigen and antibody respectively, a standard in immunology. "Phagocyte" is a term for a cell that engulfs and destroys foreign materials.
