# Airway Branching (Continued) * The airways bifurcate (divide) dichotomously (in two's). * The airways get smaller as they divide. * At the end of 23 branches, you have 8,388,608 tubes and a total of about 300 million alveoli that are basically all the same size. * Many of the lung diseases begin in the smallest airways so the patient hardly notices any symptoms.
