# Alternative Pathways * **C4 Pathway** * During the hottest part of the day, C4 plants partially close their stomata. * Cells in C4 plants use enzymes to convert carbon dioxide into four-carbon compounds. * Examples: Corn and sugarcane. * **CAM Pathway** * Stomata open at night and close during the day. * At night, plants take in $CO_2$ and fix it to organic compounds. # Factors that Affect Photosynthesis 1. Light intensity 2. Carbon dioxide levels 3. Temperature The document also includes two graphs depicting the rate of photosynthesis in relation to light intensity and temperature. The graph for light intensity shows a roughly upward-sloping curve that plateaus, indicating the rate of photosynthesis increases with increasing light intensity, but that light intensity is not the only determining factor. The graph for temperature displays a bell curve pattern, suggesting an optimal temperature for photosynthesis. Beyond this optimal temperature, the rate of photosynthesis decreases.
