PURPOSE: To provide guidelines for the use of clothes washers and dryers in the fire stations. DEFINITIONS: Garment - Station uniforms or personal protective ensembles. Grossly Contaminated - Soiled with copious amounts of blood or body fluids, exposed to a hazardous material, or exposed to a biological terrorist agent. Slightly Contaminated - Soiled with small drops of blood or body fluid. Soiled - Exposure to heat and elements of products of combustion. Ordinary wear - Normal daily wear and use. 919.1 Facilities A. All fire stations are being supplied with a clothes washer and dryer. B. The department will furnish necessary laundry products (detergent, bleach, etc.) for the specific purpose of laundering the station dish towels. Each Station will receive (1) tub of dry powder monthly and (2) bottles of bleach every two weeks as part of their normal station supply orders. Laundry products for personal items shall be purchased by the individual out of their yearly clothing allowance. 919.2 Cleaning Procedures A. Only slightly contaminated, soiled, and ordinary wear station garments and bedding materials shall be placed in department clothes washers and dryers. B. At no time shall personal protective ensembles be placed in station clothes washers or dryers. (For cleaning guidelines on P.P.E., refer to S.O.P. 605) C. At no time shall oily rags, shop towels, etc. be washed in station clothes washers or dryers. D. Slightly contaminated and soiled station uniforms shall be washed and double rinsed. A full empty cleaning cycle shall be run after washing slightly contaminated or soiled uniforms, and prior to washing ordinary wear clothes or linens. F. Ordinary wear and use only requires washing and a single rinse. G. Contaminated or soiled uniforms shall not be taken from work locations for laundering. 919.3 Biohazard Cleaning A. Safely place grossly contaminated uniforms or PPE in doubled yellow plastic bag marked with your name, shift and station, and bring it to the Logistics Division. B. DO NOT PLACE IN BIOHAZARD RED BAG. C. The Logistics Division will have the garments laundered at a facility that follows N.F.P.A. guidelines and make notification when garments are returned and ready for pickup. D. Protective gloves are recommended for this procedure. E. Ensure personal cleanliness/hygiene after handling the contaminated uniform. F. If after hours or the Logistics Division is closed, contact the on-duty District Commander for entry into the warehouse. G. At no time will contaminated gear in any form be allowed inside the offices or break area of the Logistics Division. 919.4 Haz-Mat Cleaning A. Cleaning of garments contaminated by hazardous materials or a biological terrorist agent will be handled on a case-by-case basis with consultation from the Pinellas County Hazardous Materials Team.
