## Indus Valley Civilisation ### Learning Goals * Understanding the features of the Indus Valley Civilisation. * Exploring the name of Indus Valley cities you know. * Identifying the archeological sites of Indus Valley civilisation. * The extent of the Indus Valley Civilisation ### Jump Start The Indus Valley Civilisation flourished between 2500 BCE and 1500 BCE on the banks of the Indus River. It was a great civilization that flowed across the northern part of the Indian Subcontinent. Harappa is the first site where archeological remains of this civilisation were discovered. It is also known as the Harappan Civilization. It was an urban civilization. ### Discovery and major centres The ASI (Archaeological Survey of India) played a major role in determining the antiquity of the Indus Valley Civilization. The first sites where the remains of this civilisation were discovered are Harappa in the Punjab region and Mohenjo-daro in the Sindh region. These were major cities of the Indus Valley Civilisation and were excavated by two archaeologists of the ASI, Dayaram Sahni and Rakhaldas Bandyopadhyay respectively.
