Washoe County Sheriff’s Office 701.3 Inmate Orientation Introduction Establishes formal orientations provided to inmates regarding rights, privileges, rules, regulations, expected behavior, disciplinary procedures. Additionally, this procedure provides for when the orientation video should be viewed. Purpose A formal intake orientation will be provided to inmates informing them of expected behavior and rules during the intake process. A formal housing unit orientation will be provided to all inmates regarding inmate rights, privileges, rules, regulations, expected behavior and the disciplinary procedures of the facility. Inmates will be provided with reasonable due process prior to disciplinary actions. Scope Applies to all Detention Personnel. Definitions Not Applicable. Procedure 1. Intake Lobby Orientation A. A Deputy shall inform inmates of the rules and expected behavior while in Intake. During the intake process inmates will watch the Intake orientation video. The inmate will sign the back of their inmate movement card during the classification process to indicate they have seen and understood the orientation video on expected behavior. If the inmate refuses to sign, the Deputy shall sign that the inmate viewed the Intake orientation video and refuses to sign. 2. Housing Unit Orientation A. Prior to movement to a housing unit, inmates in Intake shall view the facility orientation video. In instances in which the inmate did not view the inmate orientation video while assigned to Intake, the inmate shall view the video prior to their movement to a housing unit. The video is available to view on a specific channel, generally #122. B. Upon arrival at a housing unit, the receiving Deputy will apprise inmate(s) of any rules specific to that unit. Inmates will also be notified of the location of the posted inmate handbook for their reference. Deputies are responsible for showing their respective orientation videos for their housing units, informing the inmates of housing-specific rules, and informing inmates of the inmate handbook’s location. If the inmate becomes hostile or combative and is placed into Administrative Status prior to receiving the facility orientation, the following will occur: 1. The inmate will receive the orientation (excluding the video presentation) from the Inmate Management Deputy Unit (IMU) during the classification interview. 2. In accordance with the classification procedure, the inmate will receive the verbal orientation within seventy-two hours of placement into general population. 3. The Deputy shall indicate on the movement card that the inmate was provided a verbal orientation.
