Word Parts Pertaining to the Cardiovascular and the Lymphatic Systems Dr. Haidy Effat Associate Professor of Pharmacology & Toxicology Faculty of Pharmacy, Ain Shams University [email protected] 1 Cardiovascular System (CVS) ▪ The cardiovascular system consists of the heart and blood vessels. ▪ The blood vessels include arteries and veins. ▪ The heart pumps blood from the lungs out to the rest of the body. ▪ The blood vessels deliver oxygen and nutrients to the tissues and carry waste products to the organs responsible for elimination. 2 Important medical terms in CVS A. Blood circulation Systemic circulation - Circulation throughout the whole body via arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules and veins to deliver oxygen and nutrients to the body tissues. Pulmonary circulation - Circulation of blood from the pulmonary artery through the vessels of the lung and back to the heart through the pulmonary vein, providing gas exchange. Coronary circulation - Circulation of blood through coronary blood vessels to deliver oxygen and nutrients to the heart muscle tissue. 3 Important medical terms in CVS B. Blood vessels Aorta Large artery that is the main trunk of the arterial system, branching from the left ventricle. Arteries Vessels that carry blood from heart to arterioles. Arterioles Small vessels that receive blood from arteries. Capillaries Tiny vessels that join arterioles and venules. Venules Small vessels that gather blood from capillaries to veins. Veins Vessels that carry blood from the venules to the heart. 4 Important medical terms in CVS C. Blood pressure Normotension - Normal blood pressure Hypotension - Low blood pressure Hypertension - High blood pressure 5 Roots pertaining to heart & blood vessels Heart Word root : cardi Combining form: cardi/o Example Example Cardiomyopathy Cardiomegaly Cardi/o/my/o/pathy Cardi/o/megaly Disease of the Enlargment of the 6 heart muscle heart Roots pertaining to heart & blood vessels Atrium Word root : atri Combining form: atri/o Example Interatrial Between the atria Inter/atri/al 7 Roots pertaining to heart & blood vessels Ventricle Word root : ventricul Combining form: ventricul/o Example Ventriculotomy Surgical incision Ventricul/o/tomy of a ventricle 8 Roots pertaining to heart & blood vessels Vessel Word root : angi Combining form: angi/o Example Angioplasty Process of surgical repair Angi/o/plast/y of blood vessels Angiography Process of medical Angi/o/graph/y imaging of blood vessels 9 Roots pertaining to heart & blood vessels Vessel Word root : vas Combining form: vas/o Example Vasodilation Blood vessel Vas/o/dilation widening 10 Roots pertaining to heart & blood vessels Vein Word root : ven Combining form: ven/o Example Venous Pertaining to vein Ven/ous 11 Roots pertaining to heart & blood vessels Vein Word root : phleb Combining form: phleb/o Example Phlebotomy Incision or cutting Phleb/o/tomy in a vein 12 Roots pertaining to heart & blood vessels Artery Word root : arter, arteri Combining form: arter/o, arteri/o Example Arterial Pertaining to Arteri/al arteries 13 Roots pertaining to blood & immunity Blood Word root : hem Combining form: hem/o Example Hemorrhage Strong flow of Hem/o/rrhage blood 14 Roots pertaining to blood & immunity Blood Word root : hemat Combining form: hemat/o Example Hematology Study of blood Hemat/o/logy and blood disorders 15 Roots pertaining to blood & immunity Red blood cells Word root : erythr, erythrocyt Combining form: erythr/o, erythrocyt/o Example Example Erythrocytosis Erythropoiesis Erythr/o/cyt/osis Erythr/o/poiesis Increase in Production of 16 number of RBCs RBCs Roots pertaining to blood & immunity White blood cells Word root : leuc, leuk Combining form: leuc/o, leuk/o Example Leucopenia Reduction in Leuc/o/penia number of WBCs 17 Roots pertaining to blood & immunity Platelets Word root : thrombocyt Combining form: thrombocyt/o Example Thrombocytopenia Reduction in Thrombocyt/o/penia number of platelets 18 Roots pertaining to blood & immunity Blood clot Word root : thromb Combining form: thromb/o Example Thrombolysis Dissolving a blood Thromb/o/lysis clot 19 Roots pertaining to blood & immunity Lymphatic/Lymphoid system Word root : lymph Combining form: lymph/o Example Lymphoma Lymphoid tumor Lymph/oma 20 Roots pertaining to blood & immunity Lymph nodes Word root : lymphaden Combining form: lymphaden/o Example Lymphadenopathy Disease in lymph Lymphaden/o/path/y nodes 21 Roots pertaining to blood & immunity Bone marrow Word root : myel Combining form: myel/o Example Example Myelogenous Myelosuppression Myel/o/genous Myel/o/suppression Produced in bone Inhibition of bone 22 marrow marrow function Roots pertaining to blood & immunity Spleen Word root : splen Combining form: splen/o Example Asplenia Absence A/splen/ia of/without spleen 23 Roots pertaining to blood & immunity Thymus gland Word root : thym Combining form: thym/o Example Thymectomy Surgical removal Thym/ectomy of thymus gland 24 Suffixes pertaining to blood & immunity Condition of blood Suffix : -emia Example Anoxemia Lack of oxygen in An/ox/emia blood 25 Suffixes pertaining to blood & immunity Decrease/Deficiency Suffix : -penia Example Leucopenia Decrease in WBCs Leuc/o/penia 26 Suffixes pertaining to blood & immunity Formation/Production Suffix : -poiesis Example Erythropoiesis Production of Erythr/o/poiesis erythrocytes 27 Training True or False and correct: 1 Lympadenopathy is a disease of lymphatic system False – disease of lymph nodes 2 Phlebotomy means incision in an artery False – incision in a vein 3 Erythropoiesis is the production of RBCs True 4 Hematology is the study of blood diseases True 29
