MAIN TOURIST ATTRACTIONS IN THE SADC COUNTRIES TB pg 154-195. JULY 2024 NAMIBIA Namibia is located on the western coast of Southern Africa. The country gets its name from the Namib Desert. Even though Namibia is a big country, it has a small population and many tourists come here to enjoy the wide open spaces. NAMIBIA Fish River Canyon Fish River The Fish River Canyon is the second-largest canyon in the world. Only the Grand Canyon in America is bigger. Canyon Located in Southern Namibia, about 570km from the Capital, Windhoek. There are several lodges and campsites in the area. Why a tourist attraction? The canyon is close to the South African border that people can stay in towns like Springbok or Pofadder and visit the canyon as a day trip. Activities Bird watching Game viewing Hiking trail Etosha National Park Etosha Etosha National Park is one of Southern Africa’s most impressive game reserves. It is located in northern Namibia, about 400km from Windhoek by road. National Park The park has three campsites. It offers a pleasant climate, unspoilt wilderness and relatively low crime rate MALAWI Lake Malawi Malawi gets its name from Lake Malawi, a freshwater lake that Lake Malawi covers a third of the area of the country. The lake is 580km long and 83km wide. Activities Part of Lake Malawi is in Mozambique, where it is called Lake Niassa. Water sports Snorkeling Why a tourist attraction? SEYCHELLES The Seychelles is an archipelago of tropical islands in the Indian ocean, north-east of Madagascar. There are 40 islands and 75 low- lying atolls in the Seychelles. No one lives there. There are 3 large habitable islands: Mahe, Praslin, and La Digue. Mahe is the largest of these islands and about 90% of the population of the Seychelles lives on this island. Mahe is also the international gateway to the rest of the Seychelles. ESWATINI Hlane Royal National Park Hlane National Park is Eswatini’s largest protected park. It is Hlane Royal 67km from Manzini and close to the Mozambican border. National Park The name “Hlane” means wilderness. There are several campsites. Why a tourist attraction? The park consist of grasslands and natural forests with trees like knobthorn, leadwood and tamboti. Birds include white-backed vultures, martial eagles and bateleurs. The country also has a rich cultural diversity. Tanzania has two capital cities: Dodoma (legislative capital) and Dar es Salaam (executive capital) TANZANIA Mount Kilimanjaro Kilimanjaro National park is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Mount At 4600 meters, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. 470km away from Dar es Salaam. Kilimanjaro There are huts along the different routes up the mountain, but tour operators provide tents for tourist to stay in. Why a tourist attraction? Kilimanjaro is a major destination for climbers and mountaineers. The base of the mountain is dry bushland, further up the vegetation changes to tropical evergreen rainforests and moorland. At the top, conditions are cold and arctic, with snow and ice. River The Victoria Falls and Lake Kariba are on the Zambezi River Why a tourist attraction? Tourist can reach these attractions by road, or they can fly to Livingstone. There are many lodges along the Zambezi or tourist can camp or, if they are cruising, they can stay on their boats. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. Why a tourist attraction? The local name for the Victoria Falls is “Mosi-oa-Tunya”, which means “the smoke that thunders”. This is because from afar the spray from the falls looks like smoke. The water plunges over a cliff and 100m down into a ravine in the Zambezi river. ZIMBABWE The Great Zimbabwe Ruins The Great The Great Zimbabwe Ruins is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most important archaeological sites in Africa. Zimbabwe These ruins also gave the country of Zimbabwe its name. Ruins They are south-east of Masvingo, about halfway between the capital Harare and the Beitbridge border post by road. Why a tourist attraction? It was a city that existed from the 11 th century as a centre for the gold trade. Archeologists found pieces of pottery from Persia and China at the site.
