Cloud Computing 6/1/2025 IoT & Smart Rahul De- Ch- 10 Laudon- Ch- 5 Connected Products R2. HBR Article - Smart Connected Products What is Cloud Computing? Example: Parking Space in simple terms, Netflix Computing and Infrastructural facilities not necessarily hosted in an organization. Can be obtained over Internet as well Cloud computing explained Volatile Demand (Volume Surge during Flipkart Big Billion Days/ Amazon Great Indian Festival) Why should Applications that require collaboration across geographies organizations choose cloud Big Data Storage and Analysis computing? Startups/ SMEs- low capital for infrastructure, fast to market Pay as per use Shift from Capex to Opex Maximum Resource Utilization and Minimum Wastage Dominant Cloud Providers Tech Behind Cloud Apps Linux Storage Computing Resource Windows Mac OS Linux Computing Virtualization VM1 VM2 VM3 VM4 VM5 Creation of virtual version of operating system/ storage devices/ server/ network resources. HYPERVISOR A single physical resource as multiple virtual resources. OPERATING SYSTEM Ex: Hypervisor Technology- VMware Vsphere, Citrix Hypervisor, Microsoft Hyper V, Oracle Virtual Box HOST MACHINE Hypervisor- software which creates VMs. Host Machine and Guest Machine Tech Behind Virtualization https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZR0rG3 Cloud HKIk – IBM Hypervisor Video Computing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHpRTV P8upg – Installing a VM video Advantages of Cloud Computing Scalability Elasticity Usage Based Measured Use address needs of ability of infrastructure exactly how much Pricing to expand and contract resources are used increased demand as per demand pay as per usage Managed Service Levels Ubiquitous Heterogeneity Services define & alter one’s Access cloud provider service levels- manages heterogeneity cloud providers duration, speed, anytime anywhere manage end to end access and upgradation response.. Reduced Setup Resource Pooling Time Sharing resources, min suitable for startups wastage, max and fast to markets utilization SLA- Uptime- https://uptime.is/ Cloud Computing and Types Cloud Computing and Types Private Cloud Public Cloud Single Client- infra owned Shared Facility by org Many Clients On-premise/ Remote Cloud provider owns and manages infra Suitable for sensitive data Security concerns; but strong security Customised and tailored to measures taken by cloud providers org specific needs Ex: AWS, GCP, Microsoft Azure Security advantages Ex: VMWare private cloud Hybrid Cloud Public + Pvt Managed by org+ cloud provider/ both managed by cloud provider Regulation intensive industries Sensitive/ Critical appln- Pvt cloud Less sensitive appln- Public cloud Complexity to integrate between two cloud models Ex: Microsoft Azure Hybrid, AWS hybrid Cloud Computing Architecture and Service Models Ex: End user applications/ Enterprise Applications Ex: App development Ex: Small Startup for website/ data storage Reference img- Reference img- https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Cloud-Computing-Architecture-and-Service-Models11_fig2_318440375 Cloud Service Models FEATURE IaaS PaaS SaaS What is H/W+ System+ S/W + IaaS+ Application Cloud- based appln Provided System Mgmt tools development tools and libraries Management Vendor manages infra; Vendor manages Vendor manages everything else managed infra & dev tools; infra & appln; by client client manages everything else client manages user accounts only Cloud Typical Infrastructure for Build and deploy Single appln for Service Models Usage multiple servers and new applns; may be focused use applications for new markets When to Use Volatile Environment and Customised applns, Standardized this Model? Prefer High agility possess good applns, end to end developer team mgmt Examples AWS, Microsoft Azure, AWS elastic Gsuite, Dropbox, Google Cloud beanstalk, Redhat Salesforce Open Shift Challenges Managing huge chunk, Data Security, Customization, Vendor Lock In Integration, Vendor Feature Limitation, Lock In Vendor Lock in, Data Security Cloud Service Models Netflix caselet- questions Why did Netflix decide to move to the cloud? What were the benefits that cloud offered? Who were the competitors and why was this particular service provider selected? What were the challenges faced by Netflix while moving to the cloud? What changes did they make while migrating to cloud? What is service uptime and how much uptime were they able to achieve through cloud? How did cloud adoption improve Netflix’s business? Internet of Things What is IOT & What are its components IoT includes sensors that sense and provide data over the internet, to software that can analyze the data and provide control signals to actuators as per specified instructions and actuators would modify the existing state as per instructions. What are the different sensors you know of? Caselet- Brainstorm! In Bangalore, one of the biggest problems is water scarcity. The main source of water to the city is from Kaveri river, but not all residential apartments have sufficient supply of Kaveri Water. With the growing size of the city, the water supply is inadequate. Hence, many homeowners rely either on ground water pumped up to their over head tanks or buy from external tankers. The problem that commonly arises in this scenario is, knowing exactly how much storage they have in their storage tanks and when to switch on or off the motor to pump the groundwater and when to place orders with the tankers. How do you address this problem? Gnarus Water Management Solution- Gnarus Solutions- Water Management https://www.gnaruz.com/watersenz.html Sensor- Threshold water level Data sent to the software Software processes data and sends signal to the actuator on control condn Actuator switches the motor on and off Again threshold water level, place order with tanker Real time data on water levels and decisions reflected on app Additional features of calling plumber/ electrician/ cleaner for water tank cleaning/ motor repairs. Digital Twin IOTs/ Smart Connected Products + Analytics + AI Capabilities:  Real time monitoring  Predictive analytics  Predictive maintenance Concerns:  Privacy and Security  Network Dependency https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVS- AuSjpOQ&t=31s Rolls Royce Caselet- Example Rolls Royce, a market leader in jet engines, used to sell jet engines in the past to airplane manufacturers and then set up maintenance contracts to service those engines. However, with the advent of new technologies, this business model changed. On the servicing aspect, instead of paying service cost for the total engine, they moved to pay for the service of the engine, based on how much it is used. How do you think this was possible?
