FIGURES OF SPEECH AND OTHER LITERARY TECHNIQUES Figures of Speech any intentional deviation from literal statement or common usage that emphasizes, clarifies, or embellishes both written and spoken language. POETIC TECHNIQUES Poetic devices are a form of literary device used in poetry. RHYTHM The regular, measured flow of words or phrases in a verse or prose. STANZA Recurrent grouping of two or more lines in a poem. VERSE A name given to any poetry or metrical composition. Identify the poetic devices used: DEVICES BASED ON SOUND ALLITERATION Example: The fair breeze blew, the white foam flew The furrow followed free That sends light rustle rushes to their leaves Identify the Alliteration ASSONANCE Example: The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain. Example: Bright streaks whiz through the sky Thunk! Whoosh! Identify the onomatopoeia: The waves are racing towards the shore Booming, crashing… more more more! DEVICES BASED ON COMPARISON SIMILE A figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind. Example: As brave as a Lion Crazy like a Fox Recitation: Give an example of a simile METAPHOR Used for rhetorical effect, directly refers to one thing by mentioning another. It may provide clarity or identify hidden similarities between two different ideas. Example: Love is a battlefield Recitation: Give an example of a metaphor PERSONIFICATION Device in which an inanimate object or idea, or an abstract concept is given human qualities I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud BY WILLIAM WORDSWORTH I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Identify the Personification The lonely lighthouse vigilantly shined its light to warn ships away from its rocky coast HYPERBOLE A metaphor involving exaggeration. Example: The cross as a symbol of Christianity The colour black suggests death The dove is a symbol of peace. Recitation: Give an example of symbolism ALLUSION Literary, History, Biblical, Mythical. When the poet refers indirectly to something presumably known to the reader. Example: “And a Good Friday was had by all” is a biblical allusion to the day Christ was crucified. Example: Identify the Allusion She was a good Samaritan when she helped the lady. ACTIVITY: Write a Story, Utilize LD! Directions: Write your own short story utilizing the literary devices discussed. You must integrate a poem within your story. Include a title.
