New Pet Acquisition Data for Owners of Unclaimed Dogs Purpose Statement/Hypothesis The purpose of this research is to quantify the number of new pet acquisitions among individuals who have previously failed to reclaim their pets from animal shelters. By collecting and analyzing data on these pet owners, we aim to understand trends in pet acquisition patterns and the underlying reasons driving these decisions. This study seeks to inform animal welfare organizations and policymakers about the challenges faced by these individuals, highlighting the need for targeted education and resources that promote responsible pet ownership and reduce the cycle of pet abandonment. Ultimately, we aspire to contribute valuable insights that foster a more compassionate approach to animal care and adoption. Summary of Methods, Data, and Results Methods The research employed a single method approach, utilizing qualitative interviews. Qualitative interviews were conducted with verified owners of dogs who had previously failed to reclaim their pets from Cabot Animal Support Services. The interviews gathered details about any new pet acquisitions over a 6-month period following their failure to reclaim their pet. Data A total of 534 dogs, with verified owners, were taken in by the shelter, with 194 returned to their owners. A total of 340 interviews were attempted. The data revealed that 72.9% of respondents had acquired at least one new pet since their previous pet\'s abandonment. The demographic breakdown indicated a diverse range of ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, and living situations among participants. Interviews with individuals provided anecdotal evidence highlighting themes of emotional connection, perceived responsibility, and influences from social networks in their decision to acquire new pets. Results The analysis indicated a correlation between previous pet abandonment and a variety of factors, including emotional readiness, support systems, and prior experiences with pets. Key findings showed that individuals who reported strong emotional ties to animals were more likely to seek new pets as a means of companionship. Overall, the results underscored the need for targeted education and outreach programs to support potential adopters and prevent future pet abandonment. This percentage increased to 72.9% for those acquiring new pets within six months. Conversely, 27.1% of verified owners either did not acquire a new pet or could not be contacted within the six-month period. Conclusion The findings indicate a notable trend in pet acquisition among owners who lost their pets, suggesting that many seek new companionship relatively soon after their previous loss. This highlights an important area for further exploration into the motivations behind new pet acquisitions and the potential need for resources to guide responsible ownership and avoid cycles of abandonment.
