21/10/2024 The Globalization of Culture 1 Questions ….. Do you think globalization has affected you over the years? How? Give some examples. What about the local culture? Has it changed? 2 Johanna Bartolo 1 21/10/2024 In the past, sociologists tended to treat societies as if they were relatively isolated. From the late 1960s – the concept of globalization emerged: The world has shrunk (became a global village). Economic dependency and trade increased Use of technology and transportation improved Creating of global patterns of information exchange. 3 Globalization The growing inter-connectedness of societies across the world, with the spread of the same culture, consumer goods and economic interest across the globe. 4 Johanna Bartolo 2 21/10/2024 Consequences of globalization National and local cultures are challenged (under threat?) Cultural products, norms, values and attitudes have become more alike. International tourism (positive ?) 5 Consequences of globalization Easy and fast communication thanks to the internet (unity?) The whole world is economically interconnected and interdependent. 6 Johanna Bartolo 3 21/10/2024 Flew (2002) The evolution of new media technologies such as satellite TV and the internet has played an important role in the development of a global popular culture. Advances in multi-media technology and the digitization of cultural products like music and visual art, mean that today’s media-based culture industries operate in a global market. 7 Flew (2002) There has been a breakdown of distinction between high and popular culture. Popular culture is spread beyond the boundaries of particular nation-states with the same products sold across the globe. 8 Johanna Bartolo 4 21/10/2024 Media has a very important role in the change Global media corporations advertise and promote images of lifestyles that increasingly become part of every day's life. (becoming more alike – homogenous) 9 A media-based culture industry Refers to the fact that people across the globe experience the same cultural and consumer products. These products have become part of the way of life of many different societies. (eg: eating similar foods, following same fashion trends, listening to same music, watching same films …) 10 Johanna Bartolo 5 21/10/2024 A media-based culture industry People now have access to a wide diversity of global media, and to religions, music, food and clothing from many different countries. 11 12 Johanna Bartolo 6 21/10/2024 13 Are we losing our national identity? 14 Johanna Bartolo 7 21/10/2024 Global Culture The way cultures in different countries of the world have become more alike. Has arisen as globalization has undermined national and local cultures. 15 Ritzer (2013) Uses the example of the American food industry to explain how companies and brands now operate on a global scale. They promote a global standardized culture along with the consumer lifestyle and culture. This weakens local culture. “McDonaldization is the process by which the principles of the fast food restaurant are coming to dominate more and more the sectors of American society as well as the rest of the world”. 16 Johanna Bartolo 8 21/10/2024 Franchise An authorization granted by a company to an individual or group enabling them to carry out specified commercial activities. E.g: Mc Donald’s, Burger King, KFC, Zara, Diesel, Carrefour, Dunkin’Donuts, Hertz, Cinnabon, Yves Rocher. Result: They are promoting a global culture and weakening local cultures. 17 Companies like Vodafone, Apple, HSBC, Samsung, Coca-Cola use transnational media to promote their products globally. Their logos are known worldwide. Even particular media programmes have been globalized: The Big Brother, Dancing with the Stars. Video games have travelled across the globe as well (Fifa). 18 Johanna Bartolo 9 21/10/2024 How has culture been influenced? It has been made increasingly similar. People are watching the same films, listening to the same music, eating similar foods, watching same sport events, wearing same designer clothes, using same gadgets. This process of cultures of different countries becoming more alike and merging into one uniform culture is known as 19 20 Johanna Bartolo 10 21/10/2024 Workshop.. Group 1 - List some features Malta is losing due to globalization Group 2 – What can be done to preserve the national identity? 21 Johanna Bartolo 11
