ENG3004 Professional Dimension 1 2 Hong Kong Institution of Engineers ❑ Founded in 1947 (bringing together engineers of different disciplines for their common good). ❑ Incorporated by Government Ordinance in 1975. ❑ Membership is now the primary qualification for employment as a professional engineer in Hong Kong. ❑ In June 1995, joined the Washington Accord as one of the signatories. The engineering degrees accredited by the HKIE are recognised by all other signatories including Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK and the United States. (such as medical doctor, lawyer) In what ways do occupations try to change as they try to become professionalized? What criteria for professions do they follow? Is there an ideal type on which aspiring professions can model themselves? Professionalism is much more a matter of degree. 15 Characteristics of a Profession Extensive period of training of an intellectual character, usually obtained at a college or university. Possessing knowledge and skills vital to the well- being of the larger society. A monopoly or near-monopoly on the provision of professional services, and considerable control over professional education and the standards for admission into the profession. A unusual degree of autonomy in the workplace. A claim to be regulated by ethical standards. 16 Sociological analysis is a Sociological Analysis systematic and organized analysis of human society, individuals and culture with a sociological perspective. It is always composed of a number of individuals. A profession involves a public element. A profession is a way people earn a living and is usually something that occupies them during their working hours. Must serve some morally praiseworthy goal.
