J S S 1 First Term I R S 2023 Week 11 I R S 1st Term Lesson Note For J S S 1 Topic: Pillar of Islam - List the pillars of Islam - Significance of each of the pillar. Pillars of Islam are the fundamental of Islam or Essentials of Islam. Whenever pillars of Islam is mentioned, it mean the five most important aspects of Islam upon which other things are built and they are: 1. Iman: faith or belief 2. As-Salat: Prayer 3. Az-Zakat: Compulsory almsgiving or charity 4. As-Sawm: fasting 5. Al-Hajj: Pilgrimage Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: Islam is built on five things and he mentioned the above stated pillars, IMAN (Faith or Belief) Iman is the most important pillars of Islam. Whoever prays, fasts, gives zakat gocs for Hajj, without whole hearted belief in oneness of Allah and Messengership of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W), all his Ibadah is null and void Salat (Prayer) Salat is the second most important pillar of Islam. Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) said the first thing upon which a servant will be judged on the Day of Judgment is prayer. If it is good other thing will be considered good but if it is bad other things will be considered bad. ZAKAT (Compulsory Almsgiving) Zakat is so important in Islam to the extent that Abubakar bn Abi Quhafah, the first Khalifah of the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) had to fight some people who refused to pay zakat after the death of the Prophet. 1 J S S 1 First Term I R S 2023 Zakat is the best poverty alleviation programme to mankind. So Muslims must not neglect it. Sawm (Fasting) Fasting in the month of Ramadan is also very important in the life of Muslims. Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) said: whoever fasts in the month of Ramadan with faith and anticipation of reward, Allah will forgive him his past sins. Hajj (Pilgrimage) Hajj is the last pillar of Islam. It is also very important in the life of a Muslim. Whoever possesses the means and has the ability to perform it, then it is better for him to do so but if he refuses to perform it, it is better for such person to die as a Christian or a Jew. In conclusion, whoever denies any of the pillars of Islam or refuses to observe them intentionally, such a person is not a true and complete Muslim. These are all acts of lbadah (worship) The purpose of the Five Pillars The Five Pillars of Islam are some of the ways in which we worship Allah. They help us to be good Muslims. They help us to remember Allah at all times. A pillar is the part of a building which holds up the roof. The pillars therefore need to be strong. If some of the pillars are weak, the whole building is in danger and may fall down. In the same way, the Five Pillars of Islam uphold the Iman (faith) of the believer and support his desire to behave well. If he does not take care to practice them, his Iman will become weak. He will not remember Allah. He may therefore be easily led astray by Shaitan. A person who is led astray by Shaitan cannot be truly happy in this world and will suffer in the Hereafter, 2 J S S 1 First Term I R S 2023 The importance of the Five Pillars If a Muslim observes the Five Pillars of Islam in the right way, Allah will reward him and strengthen his Iman (faith) and guide him on the right path. He will do good and behave well in many ways. It is therefore very important for every Muslim to find out how to perform his worship in the right way. This can be learned from the study of Fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence). 3
