America - Jamestown, 1607, 3 ships and ~100 settlers, more interested in gold than farming to feed themselves; - Many died (7 out 10 died in the first years; disease, starvation or battles with indigenous peoples) Tobacco is discovered helped Jamestown thrive; it becomes a cash crop, high demand in England In 1620, the Pilgrims founded a 2nd English colony in Plymouth, Massachusetts. - They left England to escape religious persecution–they practiced a more fundamental or radical brand of Christianity—Puritans— separatists - 1630, Massachusetts Bay Colony (non-separatists) near Boston with John Winthrop - Both wanted religious freedom In 1609 Henry Hudson, from the Netherlands explored three waterways - He was looking for the Northwest Passage - Hudson Bay and Hudson strait - The Dutch established fur trade with the Iroquois indians - Established Ft. Orange (Albany) and Manhattan (Dutch West India Co.) - Germans and Scandinavians also also settled in N. America 1664, Charles II of England sends Duke of York (his brother) to expel the Dutch and claim: - New Netherlands- New York - New Amsterdam- New York City By 1750, English colonies had 1.2 million settlers. - England battled France over territories, trading rights and other issues… - Seven Years War or French-Indian War in 1754-1763 Struggles between Settlers and Native people of the land - Over trading rights, territories, religion, and other issues - Dutch and French settlers co-existed far better with the indigenous people of the Americas than the British in North America
