LESSON 4: WHEN TECHNOLOGY AND HUMANITY CROSS Using a graphic organizer, list Activating Prior Learning some technology you see at home, school, community, or social media. Categorize them according to their purpose (transportation, communication, education, etc.). Describe briefly how you or the community use these technologies you mention. Write it on a clean yellow paper. INTRODUCTION Technology keeps on progressing due to the changing times and environment and also to the ever-progressing, mind of mankind. It would not be possible for all these technological advancement to exist if it were not for the brilliance, creativeness, and power of mind. Although it has been very helpful to people, it is still not immune to criticisms and backlash. Various ethical dilemmas have been identified throughout time involving the use of different technological devices and its affects to humanity. Usually, different problems arise when either the technological device available is misused or if it was invented or produce bad results. They lay these dilemmas for the public to see and realize what are in for. Television Sets, Mobile Phones, Computers, and Humanity Several technological devices can be easily found inside the home, the most accessible place to everyone. The “celebrities” of technology are television sets, mobile phones, and computers.  According to Kantar Media, 92 percent of urban places and 70 percent of rural homes own at least one television set. This survey shows that almost all Filipinos use this particular type of device.  They also reported that Philippines, the current count of households with television sets reached 15,135 million. Televisions Used mainly as a platform for advertisements and information dissemination. Remains the most used avenue by different advertisement companies in the world. Serves as a recreational activity and a good stress reliever for every family, especially Filipino families. Television Sets, Mobile Phones, Computers, and Humanity  Paul Gottlieb Nipknow, a German student, in the late 1800’s was successful in his attempt to send images through wires with the aid of a rotating metal disc. This invention was then called the “electric telescope” that had 18 lines of resolution. Television Sets, Mobile Phones, Computers, and Humanity  In 1907, two inventions, Alan Archibaid Campbell- Swinton, who was an English scientist and Boris Rosing who was a Russian scientist, created a new system of television by using cathode ray tube in addition to mechanical scanner system. This success story gave rise to two types of television systems, namely, mechanical Electric Telescope By NIpknow Mobile Phones Used primarily for communication. Offers services like texting and calling. In the present, people use their mobile phones to surf and to take pictures. It is portable and convenient because it can fit in a pocket or bag. Television Sets, Mobile Phones, Computers, and Humanity Filipinos loves to use their mobile phones anywhere, anytime. They use it for different purposes other than for communication. In 2010, global research agency Synovate conducted a survey and declared 67 percent product ownership in the country. In fact, it was also claimed that mobile phones are considered a must-have among young Filipinos. Television Sets, Mobile Phones, Computers, and Humanity To prove that Filipinos really love to use their mobile phones, the IPos media Atas Philippines Nationwide Urban 2011-2012 survey results showed that one in every three Filipinos cannot live without a mobile phones. In other words, 30 percent of the Philippine urban population nationwide said that mobile phones are necessities in life. On April 3, 1973, Martin Cooper, a senior engineer at Motorola, made the world’s first mobile phone call. The moblile phone used by Cooper weighed 1.1 kilograms and measured 228.6x127x44.44 mm. This kind of device was capable of a 30-minute talk time. First Mobile Motorola DynaTac 800 Motorola made their first commercial mobile phone available to the public. Computers and Laptops Can be used to surf the internet and communicate. It has a keyboard, screens, and separate keyboards compared to mobile phones. For youth and those who love online or computer games, laptops or personal computers are the best choice. Television Sets, Mobile Phones, Computers, and Humanity Computers and laptops have also become part of many of the Filipino households. The number of computer or laptops sold per year may not be as high the number of mobile phones and television sets. Most of the profits gained by computer and laptop manufactures come from offices, businesses. Or school were such devices have become part of their necessities. Charles Babbage, a nineteenth-century English Mathematician professor, who designed the analytical engine which was used as the basic framework of the computers even until the present time. Generally, computers can be classified into three generation. Television Sets, Mobile Phones, Computers, and Humanity Laptops have been available to the public for even less time than personal computers. The first design of computer was so big that it could occupy whole floor of buildings. It was believed that the transition from a personal computer to a laptop was only a matter of design, an improvement and a little deviation from the standard design of a personal computer The first true portable was released in April 1981. it was called the Osborne 1. Television Sets, Mobile Phones, Computers, and Humanity A typical household own at last four of the following devices:  Mobile phone (89%)  Smartphone (53%)  Tablet (14%)  Desktop (39%)  laptop or netbooks (37%)  Smart Tv (4%) When Technology and Humanity cross… Will it be a convergence or a clash between man and machine? Did you experience having your privacy violated? Were you bullied online? Was your social media account hacked once? Freedom of Speech and Online Article III Section 4 Libel of the Philippine Constitution of 1987 states that: “No law shall be passed abridging the freedom of speech, of expression, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and petition the government for a Freedom of Speech and Online Libel However, the crime of libel or defamation has been used to suppress freedom of expression and freedom of the press in the Philippines. Various advertising companies trust that television is still one of the most used technological devices up util today. It also serves as a recreational activity and good stress reliever to most families, specifically to Filipino families. Television also is a good platform for different propagandas and advocacies. Roles Played by These Technological Advancements They are primarily used for communications. Mobile phones offer services like texting and calling. But as technology progressed, there have been many additional features included on mobile phones. In present, people used their mobile phones to surf the internet and to take pictures more than to text to call people. Other applications include music player, calendar, radio, television, and photo editor, among others. These make particular technological devices very appealing to the masses. Lastly, it is very portable and convenient because it can fit any space. “CTRL” ROBOTICS AND HUMANITY Robotics and Humanity Another great product of the innovate minds of the people is robot. The International National Economic Robotics (IFR) and United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) made their task to formulate working definition for service robots. Robotics and Humanity A preliminary extract of the relevant definition is (IFR, 2012): a) A robot is actuated mechanism programmable in two r more axes with degree of autonomy, moving within its environment, to perform intended tasks. Autonomy in this context means the ability to perform intended tasks based on the current state and sensing human intervention. b) A service robot is a robot that performs useful tasks for human or equipment excluding industrial automation application. c) A personal robot or a service robot for personal use is a service robot used for noncommercial task, usually by laypersons. Examples are domestic servant robot, automated wheelchair, personal mobility assist robot and pet exercising robot Roles Played by Robot Robots also have their own set of rules and characteristics that define what a good robot is. Isaac Asimov back in the 1940’s, formulated these laws when he was thinking of the ethical consequences of robots. These are the following Law one:  A robot may not injure a human being or through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. Law two:  A robot must obey the orders given by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the first law. Law three:  A robot must protect its existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the first and second laws. Ethical Dilemmas Faced by Robotics One of the ethical dilemmas faced by robots is safety. Another ethical dilemmas faced by robots is the emotional component. But looking at how fast technology progresses nowadays, it is not impossible for robots to develop emotions. If the problems arise when the robot deviates form the laws specified, then the maker or the inventor of the machine should e held blameworthy. Other problem may arise when the machine develops the ability to think for itself. Ethical Dilemmas Faced by Robotics One of the ethical dilemmas faced by robots is safety. Problem Research Methodology Application: Group Project: Bibliography As a group, read a research relating to technological advancements and fill the matrix. Findings Conclusions Evaluation: Answer the following questions: 1.Do people really need technology in their lives? Is it really a necessity? 2.Should there be an ethics of technology? Justify your answer. “It has become appalingly obvious that our technology has exceed our Humanity.” —Albert Einstein Thank You for listening! By: Misa & Abala
