Normative theories are a category of communication theories. They provide ethical guidelines and principles for responsible and moral communication. They serve as frameworks that provide ethical guidelines and principles for evaluating the role of media in society. Introduction These theories aim to answer questions about what the media should do, what values they should uphold, and what ethical standards they should follow in their operations? They serve as a moral compass for media practitioners and scholars, helping them navigate complex ethical dilemmas in journalism, advertising, and other communication contexts. Normative Theories Nature: Normative theories in communication are concerned with prescribing or guiding how communication should ideally take place. They offer recommendations, guidelines, and ethical principles for effective and ethical communication. Assoc. Social Responsibility Theory theorizes that media organizations have a responsibility to serve the public interest, act as a watchdog on power, and provide accurate and fair information to the public while being accountable for their actions. Authoritarian Theory: in the context of communication and media studies, places all forms of communication under government’s total control or elite authority. This theory suggests that in authoritarian regimes, the government exercises a high degree of control over the flow of information, often using censorship and propaganda to maintain its authority and shape public opinion. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Osama 01/30/20 11 Kanaker 25 Normative Theories In the Authoritarian Theory media outlets and journalists may be tightly controlled or manipulated to serve the interests of the ruling regime, limiting freedom of speech and press independence. Authoritarian Theory stands in contrast to theories that emphasize media freedom and independence, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Osama Kanaker such as the Libertarian and Social 12 01/30/20 25 Conclusion In summary, Normative theories play a crucial role in shaping our understanding of the ethical responsibilities of media and communication professionals. By providing ethical frameworks and principles, they help ensure that media outlets serve the public interest, uphold democratic values, and maintain their credibility and integrity. These theories guide media practitioners in making ethical decisions and contribute to the ongoing discourse on the ethical challenges and responsibilities in the ever-evolving landscape of communication.
