LAYOUT DESIGN BY AVERY BELL LEAD UP TO THE REVOLUTION MELOVANA CIGARS Made by a combination of Havana, Mexican, and Borneo Cigar Manufactures. Moderate in price. THE SUGAR ACT, IN ACTION BY REMY BOURASSA The Sugar Act, also known as the American Duties Act, was passed on April 5, 1764, by the parliament of Great Britain to raise revenue and colonial money for the crown of Britain. The act increased the duties on non-British supplies given to the thirteen colonies. However, some English merchants opposed the Sugar Act because it increased prices and complicated the process. Two people who were key players in the opposition against the Sugar Act were James Otis and Samuel Adams who were from Massachusetts. They wrote a report on the Sugar Act, which they shared with the Massachusetts assembly and essentially stated that the Sugar Act was a violation of the rights of colonists. So in the summer of 1764, many merchants stopped buying luxury British exports. in New York and other places, there were a lot of riots and protests, so the Sugar Act was repealed in 1766. EXECUTIVE EDITING BY MARCUS MCDONALD THE BOSTON MASSACRE: THE TRUTH REVEALED UPON THE EVE OF MARCH 5TH, 1770 A CROWD FORMED OUTSIDE A GOVERNMENT BUILDING IN BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS. THOSE GENTS, RILED UP BY DRINK, REVOLUTIONARY WORDS, AND THE “STAMP ACT”. BRITISH SOLDIERS WERE DISPATCHED TO REMOVE THE RIOTERS AND KEEP THE FOLK FROM THE BUILDING. CAPTAIN WILLIAM DALRYMPLE LED HIS MEN TO THE STEPS OF THE BUILDING. UPON THEIR ARRIVAL, THEY WERE IMMEDIATELY MET WITH A HAIL OF STONES AND BRATTLE, ONE MAN WAS KNOCKED DOWN AND UPON RECOVERY URGED HIS COMRADES TO FIRE UPON THE CROWD. ONCE THE SMOKE CLEARED, THERE WERE 3 MEN LEFT DEAD AND 8 ON THE DEATH'S DOORSTEP. UPON THE EVE OF MARCH 5TH, 1770 A CROWD FORMED OUTSIDE A GOVERNMENT BUILDING IN BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS. IN DAYS COMETH A TRIAL BEGAN FOR THE SOLDIERS, CAPTAIN WILLIAM WAS ACQUITTED ALONG WITH TWO OF HIS MEN, WHILE THE REMAINING 6 WERE CHARGED WITH MANSLAUGHTER. “THE PART I TOOK IN DEFENCE OF CPTN. PRESTON AND THE SOLDIERS, PROCURED ME ANXIETY, AND OBLOQUY ENOUGH. IT WAS, HOWEVER, ONE OF THE MOST GALLANT, GENEROUS, MANLY AND DISINTERESTED ACTIONS OF MY WHOLE LIFE, AND ONE OF THE BEST PIECES OF SERVICE I EVER RENDERED FOR MY COUNTRY.” -JOHN ADAMS THE DEFENSE LAWYER FOR THE CPTN AND HIS MEN. THE FIRST SIR THOSE GENTS HATH KILLED NAMED “CRISPUS ATTUCKS”, LATER PROCLAIMED AS THE FIRST DEATH IN THE REVOLUTION TO COME. MANY BOOKS COULD BE WRIT ON THE IMPACTS OF THE BOSTON MASSACRE, BUT IT BOILS DOWN TO THE COLLAPSE OF RELATIONS BETWEEN AMERICA AND BRITAIN, ACTING AS A MATCH TO THE OIL OF THE REVOLUTION. WRITTEN BY DANIEL, BURGER UNITED EMPIRE LOYALISTS (THE TRUTH REVEALED) THE UNITED EMPIRE LOYALISTS WERE AMERICAN COLONISTS WHO REMAINED LOYAL TO THE BRITISH CROWN DURING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION (1775–83). THEY CAME FROM DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS, INCLUDING BRITISH, GERMAN, DUTCH, FRENCH, NATIVE, AND EVEN FORMER BLACK SLAVES, WITH MANY BEING FARMERS, LABORERS, AND BUSINESSMEN. AS THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR GREW, THE LOYALISTS, FEARING THE LOSS OF THEIR RIGHTS UNDER A NEW INDEPENDENT GOVERNMENT, FOUGHT WITH BRITISH FORCES AGAINST COLONIAL REBEL PATRIOTS. AFTER THE BRITISH DEFEAT IN 1781 AND THE SIGNING OF THE TREATY OF PARIS IN 1783, MANY LOYALISTS FLED TO BRITISH TERRITORIES, SEEKING REFUGE IN CANADA, THE CARIBBEAN, AND EVEN SIERRA LEONE. THIS MIGRATION SHAPED THE DEVELOPMENT OF CANADA, LEADING TO THE CREATION OF PROVINCES LIKE ONTARIO AND NEW BRUNSWICK, BUT ALSO INFLUENCED ITS POLITICS AND CULTURE. LOYALISTS WERE GIVEN LAND AND PROTECTION BY THE BRITISH, THEY FACED HARDSHIPS SUCH AS PROPERTY LOSS AND CULTURAL DISPLACEMENT. THEIR MIGRATION SET A MODEL FOR REFUGEE MOVEMENTS AND HIGHLIGHTED EARLY STRUGGLES OVER GOVERNANCE AND IDENTITY THAT CONTINUE TO RESONATE IN MODERN DEMOCRACIES.TO COLCODE, THE ARRIVAL OF THE LOYALISTS PLAYED A VERY IMPORTANT ROLE IN SHAPING THE FUTURE OF CANADA AND THE BRITISH EMPIRE. WRITTEN BY SOPHIE BEHMARD THE QUEBEC ACT OF 1774: THE TRUTH REVEALED THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT SIGNED AN ACT DECLARING THAT THE PROVINCE KNOWN AS QUEBEC WOULD FOLLOW THE LAWS MANDATED BY NEW FRENCH CUSTOMS. WHEREAS, TO THE CRIMINAL AND JUDICIAL LAW, THE THRONE OF GREAT BRITAIN WOULD DECLARE SAID LAW. THIS IS TO THE EFFECT OF THE PROVINCE OF QUEBEC, FOLLOWING THE STANDARD OF FRENCH LAW IN EVERY REGARD, EXCEPT IN THE COURTS OF CRIMINAL LAW. LIKEWISE, THE SETTLERS OF THE PROVINCE OF QUEBEC MUST NOT RENOUNCE THEIR FAITH IN THE CHURCH OF ROME, HOWEVER, THEY MUST DECLARE FEALTY TO THE MONARCH OF GREAT BRITAIN. AT THE SAME TIME, TITHES ARE PERMITTED TO BE COLLECTED BY THE CHURCH. THIS ALSO GIVES THE LAND STRETCHING FROM RUPERT'S LAND, THE EASTERN SEA, THE EASTERN AND SOUTHERN BANKS OF THE MISSISSIPPI AND OHIO RIVERS TO THE PROVINCE OF QUEBEC AND THE FRENCH SETTLERS. MANY SETTLERS, MAINLY THE ENGLISH, ARE AGAINST THIS ACT CLAIMING IT AS FAVOURITISM AND A BREACH OF THEIR RIGHTS. LIKEWISE, THE FRENCH SETTLERS WERE MORE DIVIDED THAN NOT, AND THE LANDOWNERS PREDOMINANTLY SUPPORTED THE ACT. THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE ARE AGAINST OR NEUTRAL. THIS ACT DOES NOT UNITE THE COLONIES BUT DIVIDES THEM, AND MAKES CONTROL BY THE BRITISH MORE DIFFICULT. THE QUESTION IS: HOW WILL THIS AFFECT THE THIRTEEN COLONIES? (THIS IS ONE OF THE CONTRIBUTORS TO THE INVITATION OF QUEBEC, AN INVASION OF QUEBEC BY AMERICA, AND THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. BECAUSE THEY THOUGHT THEY WOULD LOSE VARIOUS RIGHTS, LIKE THE NEW FRENCH. THIS WAS REPEALED IN 1791, ENACTED IN 1774.) WRITTEN BY STEPHEN.W.BURGER THE THIRTEEN COLONIES THESE WERE THE THIRTEEN COLONIES ALONG THE EASTERN COAST OF WHAT IS TODAY THE UNITED STATES. THEY WERE PRIMARILY INHABITED BY ENGLISH SETTLERS, EVEN THOUGH PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT EUROPEAN NATIONS, INCLUDING THE DUTCH, FRENCH, AND GERMANS, ALSO PLAYED A PART IN FOUNDING THE SAME. THEIR FOUNDING HAD MANY DIFFERENT REASONS: ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY, A PLACE TO PRACTICE ONE'S RELIGION, AND AS REFUGEES FROM PERSECUTION. KEY FIGURES LIKE GEORGE WASHINGTON, THOMAS JEFFERSON, AND BENJAMIN FRANKLIN EMERGED FROM THIS PERIOD, SHAPING THE FUTURE OF THE NATION. THE COLONIES BEGAN TO TAKE FORM WITHIN THE EARLY 1600S, WITH THE FOUNDING OF JAMESTOWN IN 1607 AND PLYMOUTH IN 1620. EACH COLONY CONTRIBUTED TO BUILDING ON DEMOCRATIC IDEAS AND TRADING SYSTEMS, WHICH INFLUENCED THE FORMATION OF AMERICAN IDENTITY. MAJOR EVENTS, SUCH AS THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR AND THE IMPOSITION OF TAXES BY THE BRITISH, LAID A PLATFORM FOR GROWING DISCONTENT TOWARD DEMANDING INDEPENDENCE. THIRTEEN COLONIES WERE VERY IMPORTANT; THEY SET THE FOUNDATION OF THE UNITED STATES AND ESTABLISHED ITS DEMOCRATIC PRINCIPLES. THIS WHOLE ERA'S REASONS FOR COLONIZATION VARIED: IT MAY INCLUDE RICHES TO FREEDOM OF RELIGION, BY ALL OF THE COLONISTS USING DIFFERING STRATEGIES SUCH AS ALLYING AND NATIVE AMERICANS TRADING ROUTES. AS TENSIONS BEGAN RISING IN BRITISH RULE, REACTIONS TO PROTESTS AND BOYCOTTS FORMED AN ARMED RESISTANCE THAT SPARKED THE OUTBREAK OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. WRITTEN BY TERMEH GHORBANY THE ROYAL PROCLAMATION OF 1763 THE LATTER WAS BECAUSE COLONIAL GOVERNORS WERE TAKING LAND CESSIONS AND MAKING GRANTS. IT WAS, IN A WAY, THE RECOGNITION OF FIRST NATIONS RIGHTS. UNFORTUNATELY, IT WAS LARGELY INEFFECTIVE. THE SETTLERS DISREGARDED THE TREATY AND CONTINUED LIVING ON THE FIRST NATIONS’ LAND, AND PIONEERS CONTINUED MOVING FORWARD TO THE WEST. ON OCTOBER 7TH, KING GEORGE III FROM GREAT BRITAIN WROTE THE ROYAL PROCLAMATION OF 1763. IT OCCURRED IN AND FOCUSED AROUND THE EUROPEAN COLONIES AND FIRST NATIONS GROUPS OF NORTH AMERICA. IT WAS A PROCLAMATION THAT CREATED GUIDELINES. FIRSTLY, IT DEFINED THE LAND WEST OF THE COLONIES TO BE “INDIAN TERRITORIES” WHERE FIRST NATIONS PEOPLE WOULD NOT BE DISTURBED BY SETTLERS. SECONDLY, IT ESTABLISHED PROTOCOLS FOR BUYING THE FIRST NATIONS’ LAND. QUEBEC’S COLONIES WERE MAINLY INVOLVED IN THIS. THE EVENTS THAT COULD HAVE LED UP TO THE ROYAL PROCLAMATION OF 1763 WERE THE FIRST NATIONS GETTING AGGRAVATED AT THE EUROPEANS FOR SETTLING ON THEIR LAND WITHOUT PERMISSION AND BEING DISRESPECTFUL. IT MATTERS TO THE COURSE OF HISTORY BECAUSE ALTHOUGH IT WAS MOSTLY INEFFECTIVE, IT WAS THE FIRST FORMAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF FIRST NATIONS LAND RIGHTS, AND EVENTUALLY SPARKED THE BEGINNING OF THE OFFICIAL FIRST NATIONS RIGHTS. WRITTEN BY CHARLIE FENTON HISTORIC SHIFT UNFOLDS..THE TRUTH REVEALED: THE CONSTITUTIONAL ACT OF 1791 RESHAPES OUR LAND. IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD 1791, A SIGNIFICANT TRANSFORMATION EMERGED UPON OUR LAND WITH THE PERMISSION OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL ACT BY THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT. THIS VITAL LEGISLATION HAS REMOVED PORTIONS OF THE QUEBEC ACT OF 1774, SUCCESSFULLY DIVIDING THE PROVINCE OF QUEBEC INTO TWO SEPARATE COLONIES: UPPER CANADA, MEANT TO BECOME ONTARIO, AND LOWER CANADA, WHICH SHALL REMAIN OUR BELOVED QUEBEC. THIS ACT, EFFECTIVE FROM DECEMBER 26, IS A RESPONSE TO THE FLOW OF LOYALISTS SEEKING REFUGE AFTER THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. IT AIMS TO MAKE OUR GOVERNORS MORE SIMILAR TO THOSE OF BRITAIN, INTRODUCING SEPARATE ADMINISTRATORS FOR EACH COLONY. PARTICULARLY, IT HAS GRANTED PROPERTY-OWNING WOMEN IN LOWER CANADA THE RIGHT TO VOTE, A NOTABLE STEP TOWARD INCLUSIVITY ACCORDING TO TODAY'S NORMS. WHILE THE ACT ENSURES THE CONTINUITY OF OUR VALUED CIVIL LAW AND THE RIGHT TO PRACTICE OUR CATHOLIC FAITH, IT ALSO REINFORCES THE SEIGNEURIAL SYSTEM FOR LAND OWNERSHIP. NEVERTHELESS, WE MUST REMAIN ATTENTIVE, AS THE POWER GIVEN TO OUR APPOINTED COUNCILS IS GREATER THAN THAT OF OUR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES, POTENTIALLY PLANTING THE SEEDS OF CONFLICT. AS WE NAVIGATE THESE CHANGES, THE PATH TOWARD A RESPONSIBLE GOVERNMENT REMAINS UNCERTAIN, STILL, THE GROUNDWORK OF OUR FUTURE CONFEDERATION IS BEING ESTABLISHED. WRITTEN BY EMAAN DOSSA STAMP ACT: THE TRUTH REVEALED ON THE EVE OF MARCH 22, 1765, THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT PASSED THE STAMP ACT. THIS MADE IT SO THE 13 AMERICAN COLONIES HAD TO PAY A TAX FOR ALL COLONIAL COMMERCIAL AND LEGAL PAPERS, NEWSPAPERS, PAMPHLETS, CARDS, ALMANACS, AND DICE. THIS WAS IMPLEMENTED AS A DIRECT RESULT OF THE SEVEN YEARS' WAR, A WAR BRITAIN WON WHICH GAVE THEM ALL OF FRANCE'S LAND EAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI. HOWEVER, AS AMERICAN SETTLERS STREAMED INTO THESE NEW LANDS, IT DID NOT TAKE LONG BEFORE THEY STARTED TO FIGHT WITH THE NATIVE AMERICANS, LEADING TO A ROYAL PROCLAMATION ISSUED IN OCTOBER 1763, THAT FORBADE THE AMERICAN SETTLERS FROM SETTLING IN THESE LANDS. CONFLICT QUICKLY AROSE AS MANY PEOPLE IGNORED THE PROCLAMATION LEADING TO THE PONTIAC’S REBELLION (1763- 1764), AND THOUGH THOROUGHLY CRUSHED, CONVINCED THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT TO HAVE A STANDING ARMY OF 10,000 BRITISH SOLDIERS TO KEEP THE PEACE. THE COST OF THE ARMY WAS ESTIMATED TO BE $200,000 A YEAR, A PRICE THAT PARLIAMENT COULD NOT AFFORD, CONSIDERING IT WAS STILL GRAPPLING WITH POSTWAR DEBT. SO TO AFFORD THE COST THE BRITISH DECIDED THAT AS THE ARMY WAS PROTECTING THE AMERICANS, THEY SHOULD FOOT SOME OF THE COST, LEADING TO THE SUGAR ACT, AN EXTENSION OF THE MOLASSES ACT IN 1733, THAT HAD MANY MERCHANTS BOYCOTTING BRITISH PRODUCTS. LATER A SECOND TAX WAS ISSUED, THE STAMP ACT, WHICH WAS HIGHLY CONTROVERSIAL AS IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THE PARLIAMENT ISSUED A TAX WITHOUT THE CONSENT OR EVEN WARNING TO THE COLONIES. WRITTEN BY OSCAR N. GOLDSMITH THE SONS OF LIBERTY ORGANISE A TEA PARTY IN BOSTON THE SONS OF LIBERTY ARE A SOMEWHAT NEW GROUP OF SCHOLARS AND REVOLUTIONARIES. THEIR SOLE FOCUS IS THE WELL-BEING OF OUR COLONY'S PEOPLE AND THE IDEA OF FREEDOM. FREEDOM FROM THE TYRANT OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE. THE GROUP WAS FOUNDED IN 1764 AFTER THE OBSCENITY THAT WAS THE STAMP ACT. SOME OF THE FOUNDING MEMBERS OF THE GROUP INCLUDE PEOPLE SUCH AS SAMUEL ADAMS, JOHN HANCOCK, AND BENEDICT ARNOLD. NOW THESE RAPSCALLIONS HAVE BEEN REAL DEVIOUS AS OF LATELY, STARTING A NEW IDEA OF TAR AND FEATHERING. THEY DO THIS TO BRITISH SUPERIORS WHO JUST HAPPEN TO BE LEFT ALONE. THEY STRIP THEM DOWN AND COVER THEM IN TAR AND FEATHERS. IT'S A HUMILIATION TACTIC THAT IS NOW VERY POPULAR. RECENTLY THEY ALSO STAGED TWO VERY VIOLENT EVENTS AGAINST THE CROWN. THE FIRST ONE WAS THE GASPEE AFFAIR, WHERE THEY HAD RAIDED AND BURNT DOWN A LARGE BRITISH SHIP NEAR RHODE ISLAND. DOING SO CONSIDERABLY INCREASED TENSION. IT ALL CAME TO A HEAD YESTERDAY, IN ONE OF THE GREATEST SHOWINGS OF FREEDOM I'VE SEEN IN A LONG TIME. THIS MOST RECENT EVENT, COINED THE “BOSTON TEA PARTY”, HAPPENED ONLY YESTERDAY. THEY DUMPED THOUSANDS OF GALLONS OF TEA FROM BRITAIN'S SHIP INTO THE OCEAN. THIS OCCURRED BECAUSE OF THE “TEA ACT”, THAT WAS IMPOSED UPON US TO TRY TO TAX US FOR SIMPLY EXISTING. TO CONCLUDE, THE SONS OF LIBERTY ARE THE ONES ORGANIZING ALL OF THE CRAZY EVENTS THAT HAVE BEEN HAPPENING RECENTLY. WRITTEN BY HUDSON FOSTER TREATY OF PARIS & AFTER THE FALL OF QUEBEC THE TREATY OF PARIS WAS SIGNED ON 3 SEPTEMBER 1783, CONCLUDING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. ADDITIONALLY, IT ESTABLISHED A BOUNDARY BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND BRITISH NORTH AMERICA. THE AGREEMENT GAVE THE UNITED STATES LAND RESERVED FOR INDIGENOUS PEOPLES. THE BOUNDARY WENT ALONG THE CENTRE OF THE FOUR GREAT LAKES: ONTARIO, ERIE, HURON AND SUPERIOR. THE BOUNDARY RAN FROM LAKE OF THE WOODS "DUE WEST" TO WHAT THEY IMAGINED WAS THE MISSISSIPPI'S HEADWATERS. IT THEN WENT SOUTH ALONG THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. THE AMERICANS NEGOTIATED THROUGH CHARLES GRAVIER, THE FRENCH COMTE DE VERGENNES. THESE NEGOTIATIONS LED TO FISHING RIGHTS OFF NEWFOUNDLAND AND ACCESS TO THE EASTERN BANKS OF THE MISSISSIPPI BEING OBTAINED. IN TURN, THEY PROMISED RESTITUTION AND COMPENSATION TO BRITISH LOYALISTS. BRITAIN GAVE THE UNITED STATES THE VALUABLE LANDS IT HAD RESERVED FOR INDIGENOUS PEOPLES. THESE LANDS WERE RESERVED IN THE ROYAL PROCLAMATION OF 1763. THIS IGNORED NUMEROUS TREATIES MADE WITH INDIGENOUS PEOPLES. INDIGENOUS PEOPLES WERE NOT INVITED TO THE PARIS NEGOTIATIONS. MANY INDIGENOUS PEOPLE WERE SURPRISED BY THIS BETRAYAL. BETWEEN BRITAIN AND THE UNITED STATES, THE TREATY PROVED INEFFECTIVE. BRITAIN RETAINED ITS WESTERN POSTS UNTIL AFTER JAY’S TREATY IN 1794. BRITAIN DENIED THE UNITED STATES FREE NAVIGATION OF THE ST LAWRENCE RIVER. THE AMERICANS LARGELY IGNORED THEIR PROMISES TO THE LOYALISTS, MANY OF WHOM SETTLED IN CANADA. NEVERTHELESS, BRITAIN SOON RESUMED TRADING WITH, AND INVESTING IN, THE NEW REPUBLIC. WRITTEN BY ZEYNEP GHORBANY THE BOSTON TEA PARTY THE BOSTON TEA PARTY OF 1773 WAS A POLITICAL PROTEST AGAINST BRITAIN. AT GRIFFIN'S WHARF IN BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, OVER 100 COLONISTS DROPPED 342 CHESTS OF TEA INTO BRITAIN’S HARBOR. THIS WAS THE FIRST MAJOR ACT OF RESISTANCE TOWARDS THE BRITISH. THIS PROTEST SHOWED GREAT BRITAIN THAT THE AMERICANS WOULDN’T ACCEPT TAXATION. THE BOSTON TEA PARTY ORIGINATED IN THE 1760S WHEN BRITAIN WAS IN DEEP DEBT. TO REIMBURSE THE MONEY, THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT INFLICTED AN ABUNDANCE OF TAXES ON AMERICAN COLONISTS. THE STAMP ACT OF 1765 AND THE TOWNSHEND ACTS OF 1767 ARE TWO EXAMPLES OF THESE TAXES. THE BRITISH BELIEVED THESE TAXES WERE FAIR, BUT THE COLONISTS DISAGREED. FURIOUS AT BEING TAXED WITHOUT HAVING REPRESENTATION IN PARLIAMENT, THE BOSTON MASSACRE HAPPENED. THIS RESULTED IN FIVE COLONISTS DEAD AND SIX HARMED. EVENTUALLY, BRITAIN DROPPED THE TAXES IT FORCED ON THE COLONISTS, EXCEPT THE TEA TAX. BRITAIN WASN’T READY TO GIVE UP TAX REVENUE ON THE 1.2 MILLION POUNDS OF TEA THE COLONISTS DRANK YEARLY. THE SONS OF LIBERTY, A GROUP OF COLONIAL MERCHANTS, WERE PROTESTORS AGAINST TAXES, LIKE THE STAMP ACT. THESE WERE THE MEMBERS WHO WERE INVOLVED IN THE BOSTON TEA PARTY. DISGUISED AS NATIVE AMERICANS, THEY DROPPED 342 CHESTS OF TEA INTO THE BRITISH WATERS. THE BOSTON TEA PARTY INJURED NOBODY. ASIDE FROM DESTROYING A GREAT DEAL OF TEA, NO PROPERTY WAS DAMAGED OR LOOTED. HOWEVER, IT IS SAID THE PARTICIPANTS STOLE THE DECKS CLEAN. WRITTEN BY SERINA MAATOUK
