Study Notes
Zoonoses
- Zoonoses are diseases and infections that are naturally transmitted between vertebrate animals and humans.
- There are over 200 known types of zoonoses.
- Zoonoses comprise a large percentage of new and existing diseases in humans.
Transmission of Zoonoses
- Transmission of infection requires three elements: a source of pathogens, a susceptible host, and a means of transmission for the microorganism.
- Transmission can occur through:
- Direct contact with the animal.
- Vector (such as fleas or tick).
- Food or water contamination.
Types of Zoonoses
Reverse Zoonoses
- Reverse zoonoses: Infectious disease of people occasionally transferred to animals and then transferred back to people.
- This type of transmission occurs when an infection is transferred from humans to animals and then back to humans.
Direct Zoonoses
- Direct zoonoses are transmitted from an infected vertebrate host to a susceptible vertebrate host.
- Transmission occurs through:
- Direct physical contact with an animal.
- Vehicle or mechanical vector.
- Only a single vertebrate species is required to perpetuate this infection cycle.
