Study Notes
Wildland-Urban Interface Structural Triage & Defense
- Structures threatened by wildland fire are often located in remote areas with limited access.
-
Five factors to consider when making a triage decision:
- Firefighter safety
- Structure characteristics (roof material, design, location)
- Surrounding fuels (defensible space)
- Fire behavior
- Available resources and water supply
-
Three categories of structural triage:
- Structures needing little or no attention
- Structures needing protection, but savable
- Structures that are indefensible
-
Standard structure defense engine orders:
- Mark the route or alternative route, including safety zones.
- Lead the lines behind the engine and not in the exit path.
- Back the engine into position for safety and convenience.
- Leave engine running.
- Don't block access for other equipment or evacuating vehicles.
- Do not park over flammable vegetation.
- Park on the side of the structure that minimizes heat or firebrand exposure.
- Park close enough to the structure but not right next to it to limit hose line length.
- Provide a roofline for quick action on small ember fires.
- An engine safety line should be provided for crew protection.
- Stay mobile and avoid getting stuck in one location.
