- Volleyball was created in 1895 in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
- William Morgan, a YMCA physical education director, started volleyball.
- The original name for volleyball was Mintonette.
- Mintonette/Volleyball was designed as a less physically demanding sport than basketball for older members.
Rules
Serve
- A coin toss determines which team serves first.
- When serving, the ball must be served behind the end line by the right back player.
- A serve is legal if the ball touches the net and goes into the opponent’s court.
- When a team receives the ball to serve, members must rotate clockwise.
Net
- Players cannot: touch the net, step over the centerline, or reach over the net.
- Net height for women: 7' 4 1/8”.
- Net height for men: 7' 11 5/8”.
Contact
- Holding or throwing the ball while it is in play is illegal (considered a "carry").
- Contact is counted each time the ball touches a player; a block is NOT considered a contact.
- A team has a maximum of 3 contacts before sending the ball over the net.
- A player cannot play a ball twice in succession unless another teammate plays it in between.
Boundary
- A ball landing on the boundary line is considered in.
- If the ball hits the ceiling and continues to the other side, it is illegal.
- If the ball hits the ceiling and returns to the same side, it is playable if another contact is permitted.
Scoring
- Rally scoring: A point is awarded at the end of every play.
- A point is awarded if the ball contacts the floor or an error is made
- A game consists of 25 points, and a team must win by 2 points.
- A match consists of 2/3 games.
Positions
- Six players are permitted on a side.
- Three front row players.
- Three back row players (who are not allowed to block or spike in front of the 10 ft line).
Basic Skills of Volleyball
Forearm Pass/Bump
- Elbows are extended, and forearms are rolled outward to create a flat surface.
- Heels and thumbs of the hands are together.
- Contact is made on the forearms between the knees and the waist.
Overhead Pass/Set
- Thumbs and index finger form a triangular window above the forehead.

Spike/Attack/Hit
- It is the 3rd sequence of a pass(bump), set, spike (hit) combination.

- Overhand serve: Contact the ball above your shoulder with an open palm.
- Jump Serve: Use an overhand serve while jumping in the air.
