Faults

  • A fault is an invalid serve, hit, or block that results in a point for the opposing team.
  • Types of faults:
    • Serving fault: when the server fails to make a correct serve, such as hitting the ball out of bounds or into the net.
    • Hitting fault: when a player hits the ball into the net, out of bounds, or commits a touching or catching fault.
    • Blocking fault: when a blocker touches the net or reaches over the net to block the ball.
    • Lift fault: when a player lifts or carries the ball instead of hitting it.

Errors

  • An error is a mistake made by a player or team that results in a point for the opposing team.
  • Types of errors:
    • Hitting error: when a player hits the ball out of bounds or into the net.
    • Setting error: when a setter sets the ball to the wrong location or to a player who is not in position to attack.
    • Blocking error: when a blocker fails to block the ball or blocks it out of bounds.
