Study Notes
The Medulla
- Renal pyramids are located in the medulla, with their base adjacent to the cortex and apex forming the renal papilla.
- The renal papilla empties urine into the Minor Calyx in the kidney.
- The medulla contains straight tubules and the loop of Henle, which consists of thick and thin ascending and descending segments, forming a U-shaped structure.
- The thin segment of the Henle loop resembles blood capillaries, but can be distinguished by the absence of red blood cells in the lumen.
Papillary Region
- The papillary region faces the Minor Calyx.
- The terminal portion of the collecting tubules is called the papillary duct, located near the tip of the papilla.
- The papillary duct has a wide lumen and is lined with columnar cells.
- The collecting tubules in the papillary region are bounded by the cuboidal cells.
Bladder and Urinary Passages
- The urinary passages consist of the calyces, pelvis, ureter, bladder, and urethra.
- The calyces, pelvis, ureter, and bladder have a similar structure, with gradual wall thickening towards the bladder.
- The mucosa of the urinary passages consists of transitional epithelium and lamina propria.
- All urinary passages are covered by an adventitia membrane, except for the upper part of the bladder, which is covered by peritoneum.
Bladder Structure
- Undistended bladder has 5-6 cell layers with rounded cells, which stretch to 3-4 cell layers with squamous superficial cells when full.
- Muscular layer consists of inner longitudinal, outer circular, and additional outer longitudinal muscle layers in the lower part.
- Muscle fibers in the bladder run in three directions: inner longitudinal, middle circular, and outer longitudinal.
Urinary Bladder Layers
- Four tissue layers: Tunica Mucosa, Submucosa, Tunica Muscularis, and Tunica (Adventitia).
- Tunica Mucosa: Transitional epithelium on the lamina propria of the connective tissue.
- Submucosa: Vascular layer with rich elastic fiber layer.
- Tunica Muscularis: Inner, middle, and outer smooth muscle layers.
- Tunica (Adventitia): Serosa connective tissue.
Ureter Structure
- Three tissue layers: Mucosa, Muscularis, and Serosa (Adventitia).
- Mucosa has fewer cell layers than the bladder.
- Muscularis is much thinner than the bladder.
Urethra
- A tube that carries urine from the bladder to the exterior.
- In men, it also carries sperm.
- In women, it is only a urinary organ.
