Urban Expansion Phases
- Urban areas are now home to half of the world's population
- Urban expansion is a spatial and temporal process involving population growth and geographic area increase
- Urban growth involves two phases:
- Centripetal: Concentration/densification of population and economic activities within city centers. This growth phase happens during the initial stages of city development
- Centrifugal: Deconcentration/desdensification of population and economic activities outward from city centers. As cities expand outward, this phase involves creation of suburbs and peri-urban areas.
Suburbanization
- Suburbanization definition, is the outward expansion of urban areas beyond existing city limits
- Factors that contribute to suburbanization include rising land prices in city centers, development of public transportation to suburbs and lowering of housing costs in suburbs
- Features of suburbanization:
- Population growth in suburbs
- Shifting of economic activity to suburbs
- Changes in urban planning and development configuration
- Suburbanization has led to traffic problems and environmental impacts
Portugal's Urban Expansion
- Urban expansion in Portugal started in the 1950s, significantly increasing in the 1980's. A notable pattern appeared and involved the outer areas of large Portuguese cities
- Key factors in Portuguese urban expansion include:
- Increased land prices in the city centers
- Improvement of public transportation systems allowing easy commute to suburban areas
