Study Notes
Types of Synovial Joints
- Six main types of synovial joints: Hinge, Ball and Socket, Condyloid, Pivot, Gliding, and Saddle.
Hinge Joint
- Allows movement in one plane, similar to a door hinge.
- Example: Elbow joint connects the humerus to the radius and ulna.
Ball and Socket Joint
- Provides the greatest range of motion; allows for rotation and movement in multiple directions.
- Example: Hip joint connects the femur to the pelvic girdle.
Pivot Joint
- Enables rotational movement around a single axis.
- Example: Joint in the neck that allows for head rotation.
Condyloid Joint
- Permits movement but restricts rotation; allows two degrees of freedom.
- Example: Wrist joint between the carpals and the radius/ulna.
Gliding Joint
- Offers sliding movements between flat surfaces; allows limited movement.
- Example: Joints between carpal bones in the wrist and tarsal bones in the ankle.
Saddle Joint
- Allows movement back and forth and side to side; resembles a saddle shape.
- Example: Knuckle joints (metacarpals to phalanges) permit various hand movements.
