Types of Speeches
- Persuasive speeches aim to convince the audience on a particular subject using facts, ranging from entertainment to politics.
- Informative speeches educate the audience on a topic or message using facts, data, and statistics.
- Special occasion speeches are personal, may use storytelling or personal reflection, and are not informative or persuasive.
- Demonstrative speeches use visual aids and/or physical demonstrations with information.
- Entertaining speeches aim to capture the audience's attention, amuse them, and deliver a message.
- Explanatory speeches provide detailed information on a subject to an audience with basic knowledge of the topic.
- Motivational speeches aim to evoke emotions and motivate the audience to take action.
Writing a Speech
- A speech should be structured into three sections: introduction, body, and conclusion.
- The introduction should grab the audience's attention, introduce the topic, and state the speaker's views.
- The body should provide a detailed explanation of the topic.
- The conclusion should state the speaker's thoughts or suggestions and encourage the audience to think or act.
- Consider the audience and tailor the speech to them, using relevant information and a personal touch.
- Practice the speech out loud to get a feel for how it sounds and to connect with the audience.
Preparing a Speech
- Create a full-sentence outline to prepare the speech and a shortened outline for speaking notes.
- An outline helps keep the speaker on track and sound authoritative.
- Ask questions after writing the speech, such as:
- Where might the audience lose interest?
- What parts of the speech are clearest?
- Where might the audience relate to what I'm saying?
- Where might the audience not understand what I'm saying?
- Did I stay within the time limit?
