    • Assignment: U50, U51, U52, C821, C822, and Class A Structural Assignment.
    • Staging locations:
      • Structural companies (except E31, L31): perimeter entry number 194, with C642 in charge of staging.
      • E31, L31 (if assigned): Fire Station 51, unless specified otherwise by the IC.

    Alert 1 & 2 Response Procedure

    • Staging locations:
      • E31, L31 (if assigned): perimeter entry number 132, unless specified otherwise by the IC.
      • All other structural personnel: respond to perimeter entries determined by the IC.

    Alert 3 On-Airport Response Procedure

    • E31, L31 (if assigned): enter the airport through perimeter entry number 132, unless specified otherwise by the IC.
    • Other companies: respond to perimeter entries determined by the IC.

    Alert 3 North and Off-Airport

    • C642 and the first two companies assigned: respond to the crash site.
    • Companies responding west of Memorial: stage at Sheridan and 36th Street North to await assignment.
    • Companies responding east of Memorial: stage at Mingo and 46th Street North to await assignment.
    • 821 or ARFF company officer determines which airport truck(s) respond to Alert 3s off-airport.

Alert 3 East, West, or South and Off-Airport

    • All personnel respond as appropriate and receive assignment from the IC.
    • Airport Safety Officer proceeds to:
      • Perimeter Entry 194 (if Alert 3 is on EAST side of Airport)
      • Perimeter Entry 24 (if Alert 3 is on WEST side of Airport)
      • Perimeter Entry nearest Alert 3 site

    ARFF Guides

    • Each aircraft fire is unique and must be individually evaluated.
    • Basic guidelines for effecting attack:
      • Approach:
        • ARFF Vehicles may need to negotiate into the scene around wreckage, victims, and other obstructions.
        • Personnel may have to guide the apparatus into position.
        • Close enough to gain maximum effectiveness from streams and lines.
        • Upwind, considering escape/rescue routes, and not blocking other apparatus.
      • Attack:
        • With the wind.
        • Utilize streams as soon as within range.
        • Protect and isolate the aircraft from the fuel spill fire.
        • Knock down the fire.
        • Immediately reduce the fire in the "critical fire area" adjacent to the aircraft fuselage.
        • Control 90% of the fire intensity within one minute.
        • Use short bursts of 10-15 seconds of extinguishing agent to conserve agent and check application range and effectiveness.
      • Rescue:
        • Begin upon arrival to support evacuees or initiate rescue.
        • At least two rescuers working together.
        • Use normal exits, emergency exits, or force entry, in this order.
        • Transport occupants to a tenable atmosphere.

    Control

    • Protect the fuselage and cover spill area with foam.
    • Prevent the spread of fire.
    • Arrange backup water and foam supplies.

    Off-Airport Aircraft Emergencies

    • Initiate both fire control and EMS (rescue) as soon as possible.
    • Scene lighting, extrication, treatment, transportation, and site safety must be addressed.
    • First fire company assumes command or passes command and assists escaping passengers and/or provides an escape path for the escaping passengers.

    Security and Site Safety

    • Request police to secure the scene.
    • Remember that the entire scene is a crime scene until proven otherwise.
    • Have police secure a route in and out of the incident site to permit easy movement of emergency equipment, particularly ambulances going to hospitals.
    • Limit personnel in the crash site to prevent destruction of evidence.
    • Be aware of the hazards of aircraft accidents, including:
      • Electrical power running through the aircraft's electrical wiring.
      • Oxygen cylinders that can explode, become missiles, and/or ignite flammable liquids.
      • Jagged metal parts that can easily cut through protective clothing and hoselines.
      • High-pressure hydraulic lines that can cause serious injury if cut or broken.
      • Composite materials in aircraft construction that can emit free-floating fibers when burning.

    Investigation and Documentation

    • All aircraft accidents are investigated to learn the "cause" of the accident in order to prevent future accidents.
    • Document everything, including actions taken and evidence collected.
    • Do not remove any objects or materials from the crash site until authorized by investigators.
