Tuberculosis (TB)
- Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious lung disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
- Transmission occurs via airborne droplets. The bacteria are aerosolized, inhaled into the lungs, and adhere to the alveoli.
- The body's immune response involves macrophages engulfing the bacteria.
- Granulomas (lesions) develop in the lungs as part of the immune response.
- Macrophages are immune cells that engulf and destroy pathogens, alerting the immune system to infection.
Symptoms of TB
- Persistent cough lasting over three weeks.
- Production of purulent or bloody sputum (phlegm).
- Unexplained weight loss.
- Night sweats.
- Lethargy (lack of energy).
- These symptoms are screened for on hospital admission to identify potential TB cases and initiate airborne precautions if needed
