What is the nonspeech laryngeal function of the larynx, and what is the advantage and disadvantage of coughing as a protective mechanism of the airway?
The nonspeech laryngeal function of the larynx includes its role in protective function of the airway. Coughing is a violent reflexive action which requires abduction of the vocal folds, deep inhalation, tensing and adducting the vocal folds, elevation of the larynx, and high subglottal pressure. The advantage of coughing is that it functions as a safety mechanism to expel irritants, but the disadvantage is that the force required for its production leads to chronic irritation and vocal abuse.
What is the purpose of throat clearing and how is it useful?
What is the purpose of throat clearing and how is it useful?
Throat clearing is useful to clear the airway.
Explain the vegetative function of the larynx in the respiratory system pathway and its role in protecting the airway during swallowing.
Explain the vegetative function of the larynx in the respiratory system pathway and its role in protecting the airway during swallowing.
The larynx has a vegetative function in the respiratory system pathway and serves as a protective mechanism for the airway during swallowing. It closes up to keep things away from the airway and helps to fix thoracic structures for activities that require abdominal pressure, such as bowel movement, lifting weight, and giving birth. During these activities, the vocal folds are approximated.
