The Larynx
- The larynx is located in the neck.
- It is composed of cartilage, a material similar to bone but less hard.
- The larynx's main structure is made of two large cartilages attached to the top of the trachea.
- The front of the larynx forms a point, known as the Adam's Apple.
- Inside the larynx are the vocal folds, two thick flaps of muscle similar to lips.
- The vocal folds are attached to the thyroid cartilage at the front and the arytenoid cartilages at the back.
- The arytenoid cartilages can move the vocal folds apart or together, changing the glottis opening.
- The glottis is the opening between the vocal folds.
- When the vocal folds are apart, the glottis is open.
- When the vocal folds are pressed together, the glottis is closed.
Different States of the Vocal Folds
- Wide Apart: Vocal folds are wide apart during normal breathing and voiceless consonants like p, f, s.
- Narrow Glottis: Air passing through a narrowed glottis creates a voiceless glottal fricative sound (h).
- Position for Vocal Fold Vibration: When vocal fold edges touch or nearly touch, air passing through causes vibration. Air pressure from the lungs pushes them apart, causing a slight escape of air. This rapid opening and closing happens repeatedly, resulting in vocal fold vibration.
- Vocal Folds Tightly Closed: Vocal folds are pressed together, preventing air passage. This creates a glottal stop or glottal plosive (?).
Respiration and Voicing
- An egressive pulmonic airstream is created when air is pushed out of the lungs.
- All speech sounds are made with air movement, with the egressive pulmonic airstream being the most common in languages worldwide.
