Derivatives of Twill Weave
- Twill weave is a basic woven structure
- Following are common derivatives from basic twill weave:
- Pointed Twill
- Herringbone Twill
- Combined Twill
- Broken Twill
- Elongated Twill
Pointed Twills
- Formed by combining right and left-hand twills on specific ends
- Number of ends (R + L) and picks (# of Threads of Twill Factor) are calculated:
- Ends = R + L
- Picks = # of Threads of Twill Factor
- Where 'L' is the number of ends with left-hand twill and 'R' is the number of ends with right-hand twill
Herringbone Twills
- Similar to pointed twills, but the twill factor is reversed at the point of direction change
- Ends are calculated:
- Ends = L + R
- Picks are calculated:
- Picks = # of Threads of Twill Factor
Combined Twills
- Formed from combining two or more twills within a design
- Calculation of ends (LCM of twill factors x # of twills) and picks (LCM of twill factors):
- Ends = LCM of the twill factors x # of Twills
- Picks = LCM of the twill factors
Broken Twills
- The diagonal line of a twill is deliberately broken to create attractive effects
- Two methods are commonly used:
- Reversing Method
- Entering & Skipping Method
Reversing Method
- A regular twill is reversed in groups (e.g., 2, 3, 4) called the Reversing Unit
- Calculation of ends (LCM of Twice of Reversing Unit & Threads of Twill) and picks (Threads of Twill):
- Ends = LCM of Twice of Reversing Unit & Threads of Twill
- Picks = Threads of Twill
Entering & Skipping Method
- Broken twills are formed by entering and skipping threads
- The most suitable skipping number is one less or more than the entering number
- Calculation of ends (Entering Factor x Threads of Twill) and picks (Threads of Twill):
- Ends = Entering Factor x Threads of Twill
- Picks = Threads of Twill
Elongated Twills
- The diagonal line of the twill is formed at an angle other than 45°
- The angle of the diagonal line depends on two factors:
- Thread Densities (ends per inch & picks per inch)
- Construction of Twill Weave
- Elongated Twills can be created by varying thread densities, using a special construction method, or by combining the two
