Study Notes

Derivatives of Twill Weave

  • Twill weaves create a diagonal pattern, and various derivatives alter this basic pattern.
  • Common derivatives include Pointed Twill, Herringbone Twill, Combined Twill, Broken Twill, and Elongated Twill.

Pointed Twills

  • Formed by combining right and left-hand twills on specific ends.
  • Calculation of ends and picks involves the reversing unit and threads of twill factor.
    • Ends = R + L (where R = number of right hand twill ends, and L= number of left hand twill ends)
    • Picks = # threads of the twill factor
  • Example: 3/1 twill with 4 ends right and 4 ends left results in 8 total ends and 4 total picks.

Herringbone Twills

  • Similar to pointed twills, but twill direction reverses at the point of change.
  • Ends = L + R (where L = number of left hand twill ends, and R = number of right hand twill ends)
  • Picks = # threads of the twill factor
  • Twill factors reverse when twill direction changes.

Combined Twills

  • Formed by combining two or more twills within the same design.
  • Calculate ends and picks using the least common multiple (LCM) of the twill factors.
    • Ends = LCM of twill factors x # of twills
    • Picks = LCM of twill factors

Broken Twills

  • The diagonal line of the twill is purposely broken to create attractive patterns.
  • Created using two main methods:
    • Reversing Method: Regular twill broken by reversing its design in sets.
      • Ends: LCM of (2 x Reversing Unit) & Threads of Twill
      • Picks: Threads of Twill
    • Entering and Skipping Method: Entering and skipping threads in an ordinary twill.
      • Ends: Entering Factor x Threads of Twill
      • Picks: Threads of Twill

Elongated Twills

  • The angle of the diagonal line in these twills varies from the 45° angle of regular twills.
  • Angle formation depends on:
    • Thread densities (ends per inch, picks per inch).
      • Formula: Tan θ = Ends Per Inch / Picks Per Inch.
    • Design of the twill weave (Special methods) -Formula: Tan θ = Upward Factor / Outward Factor
