Study Notes

Temperature Scales

Definition

  • Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of particles in a substance
  • Heat is the transfer of energy from one body to another due to a temperature difference

Temperature Scales

  • Celsius (°C) Scale
    • Developed by Anders Celsius in 1742
    • Water freezes at 0°C and boils at 100°C
    • Most commonly used scale in everyday applications
  • Fahrenheit (°F) Scale
    • Developed by Gabriel Fahrenheit in 1724
    • Water freezes at 32°F and boils at 212°F
    • Used in some countries, especially in the United States
  • Kelvin (K) Scale
    • Developed by William Thomson (Lord Kelvin) in 1848
    • Absolute temperature scale, with 0 K as absolute zero (-273.15°C)
    • Used in scientific and engineering applications
  • Rankine (°R) Scale
    • Developed by William Rankine in 1859
    • Absolute temperature scale, with 0°R as absolute zero (-459.67°F)
    • Used in some engineering applications, especially in the United States

Conversion between Temperature Scales

  • Celsius to Fahrenheit: °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32
  • Fahrenheit to Celsius: °C = (°F - 32) × 5/9
  • Celsius to Kelvin: K = °C + 273.15
  • Kelvin to Celsius: °C = K - 273.15

Learn about the different temperature scales, including Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin, and Rankine, and how to convert between them. Understand the definitions and applications of each scale.
