Study Notes
Syntax: Heads and Phrases
- Syntax is the study of sentence structure, focusing on how words combine to form phrases and sentences.
- It examines the rules governing the organization and structure of language.
- A sentence like "The cat sat on the mat" has a subject (The cat), a predicate (sat on the mat), and smaller phrases.
Phrases and Constituents
- A phrase is a group of words functioning as a unit within a sentence.
- Constituents are building blocks of syntax, identified through substitution and movement tests.
- "On the mat" is an example of a prepositional phrase.
- Using substitution, replacing "on the mat" with "there" shows a unit ("The cat sat there").
Determiners
- Determiners are words placed before nouns.
- Their function is to make the noun clear.
- Different determiners include definite articles ("the"), indefinite articles ("a," "an"), demonstratives ("this," "that"), quantifiers ("a few," "a little"), numbers ("one," "ten"), distributives ("all," "both"), difference words ("other," "another"), and pre-determiners ("such," "what").
Types of Adverbs
- Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.
- Adverbs of time describe when an action takes place
- Adverbs of place describe where an action takes place
- Adverbs of manner describe how an action takes place
- Adverbs of degree describe how much or to what extent something happens
- Adverbs of frequency describe how often something happens
- Conjunctive adverbs connect phrases or sentences.
Identifying Phrases
- Phrases in sentences are classified as Noun Phrases (NP), Verb Phrases (VP), and Prepositional Phrases (PP).
- Substitution tests can help identify these phrases.
Heads of Phrases
- Every phrase has a head, the central word, determining type and meaning.
- Other elements modify or complement the head.
- "The fluffy cat" — "cat" is the head.
Exercise 1: Identifying the Head of a Phrase
- Instructions: Identify the head of the phrase in each sentence.
- Example: "The tall boy in the blue shirt" → "boy"
Exercise 2: Matching Heads with Modifiers
- Column A: Heads (e.g., cat, studying)
- Column B: Modifiers/Complements (e.g., on the floor, in the library).
Exercise 3: Determining Phrase Categories
- Determine the category (NP, VP, AdjP, AdvP, PP) and identify the head for each example.
- Example: "The tiny bird flew away" -> NP—head = "bird"
Exercise 4: Expanding Phrases
- Instructions: Expand the given heads into full descriptive phrases.
- Example: "Head: dog" — "Expanded Phrase: The big dog in the backyard."
Phrase Types
- There are five main types of phrases:
- Noun Phrases (NP)
- Verb Phrases (VP)
- Adjective Phrases (AdjP)
- Adverb Phrases (AdvP)
- Prepositional Phrases (PP)
Modifiers and Complements
- Modifiers add detail about the head.
- Complements add required information for the head's meaning.
Phrase Structure Rules
- Phrase structure rules describe how phrases are hierarchically organized.
- General format: XP → (Specifier) X (Complement).
