Study Notes
Succinylcholine Overview
- Classifies as a depolarizing neuromuscular blocker.
- Trade names include Anectine and Sucostrin.
Succinylcholine Description
- Acts as an ultra-short acting neuromuscular blocking agent.
- Does not alter the patient’s level of consciousness.
Succinylcholine Mechanism of Action
- Binds to acetylcholine (ACh) receptors, leading to initial muscle contractions (fasciculations).
- Prevents further depolarization of skeletal muscles, resulting in systemic flaccid paralysis.
Indications for Use
- Mainly indicated for facilitating endotracheal intubation during procedures.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to succinylcholine.
- Patients with narrow-angle glaucoma or penetrating injuries to the eye.
- Its safety during pregnancy has not been established.
Side Effects
- Common side effects include muscle fasciculations and myalgia.
- Cardiac issues might arise, such as bradycardia, tachycardia, and dysrhythmias.
- Risk of apnea and sympathetic stimulation.
Administration Guidelines
- Adults: 1-1.5 mg/kg via IV or IM over 10-30 seconds.
- Pediatrics: 1-2 mg/kg via IV or IM.
- For prolonged paralysis, a dosage of 1 g in 1 L at a specified rate can be administered.
