- Communication is a dynamic process exchanging information through common symbols, signs, or information.
- It's a two-sided (dialogue) process, not a one-sided monologue.
- Communication involves listening and understanding with respect, expressing ideas clearly, and conveying information (thoughts or feelings) so it is received and understood.
- Effective communication depends on the receiver's experiences and how the message is delivered.
Model of Communication
- Sender: Delivers the message to a recipient.
- Message: The information being relayed.
- Channel of Communication: The method used to deliver the message.
- Decoding: The receiver interprets the message.
- Receiver: The person receiving the message.
- Feedback: Receiver's response or feedback that starts the interaction.

- Communication is composed of learned skills including accuracy, efficiency and supportiveness.
Types of Communication
- Communication happens through both verbal and nonverbal interactions.
- Nonverbal communication includes facial expressions, gestures, eye contact, body posture, paralanguage (rate, rhythm, prosody, volume, tone, pitch), distance, touch, and appearance.
- Verbal communication focuses on the content of the spoken words.
