Study Notes
Stoichiometry
- Limiting reactant or reagent: the substance that limits the amount of products that can be formed in a reaction; it is always used up in the reaction.
- Excess reactant or reagent: the reagent that is more than enough to react with a limiting reactant or reagent.
- In a chemical reaction, for every 4 moles of NH3, 5 moles of O2 will react.
- The conversion from moles of O2 to moles of H2O can be calculated as follows: mole H2O / mole O2 = 18 mol H2O / 5 mol O2.
Chemistry Concepts
- Significant figures or digits: those digits in a measurement that are known with certainty and the last digit uncertain or estimated.
- General guidelines for determining significant figures:
- Non-zero digits are always significant.
- Zeros may or may not be considered significant.
Temperature Conversions
- Temperature conversion formulas:
- °C → °F: 9/5 (°C) + 32
- °F → °C: 5/9 (°F – 32)
- °C → K: °C + 273
Atomic Structure
- Aufbau Principle: states that electrons occupy the lowest available energy levels in an atom.
- The order of sublevels in an atom, in increasing energy, is: 1s, 2s, 2p, 3s, 3p, 4s, 3d, 4p, 5s, 4d, 5p, 6s, 4f, 5d, 6p, 7s, 5f, 6d, 7p.
- A particular sublevel or orbital can only hold a maximum number of electrons.
Chemistry Tips
- Measurements are expressed as a number defined by an appropriate unit.
- Accuracy refers to the closeness of measurements to a true value.
