Study Notes
Tibia and Fibula
- The tibia and fibula articulate at the tibiofibular joint.
- The tibial tuberosity is a rough anterior surface of the tibia, near the proximal condyles.
- The anterior border of the tibia, called the shin, extends from the tibial tuberosity.
- The medial malleolus is the prominence formed by the medial aspect of the tibia.
- The fibula is located lateral to the tibia and has a knob-like head, a shaft, a neck, and the distal lateral malleolus.
Bones of the Tarsals, Metatarsals, and Phalanges
- The tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges form the ankle and foot.
- The seven tarsal bones resemble the carpals but have different shapes.
- The calcaneus, the largest tarsal bone, is the heel bone.
- The navicular bone is located on the medial side of the ankle.
- The metatarsals resemble the metacarpals but there are five, numbered I-V from medial to lateral.
- The phalanges form the toes; the great toe (hallux) has 2 phalanges and the other toes have 3 each.
Arches of the Foot
- The three arches of the foot are the medial longitudinal arch, lateral longitudinal arch, and transverse arch.
- The medial longitudinal arch is the highest arch and extends from the heel to the great toe.
- The lateral longitudinal arch is less prominent, and extends from the heel to the little toe.
- The transverse arch is perpendicular to the longitudinal arches, passing through the distal row of tarsals and the base of the metatarsals.
- The bones of the foot interlock and ligaments and muscles help maintain the arches’ shape.
Clinical View: Pathologies of the Foot
- Bunions are characterized by a localized swelling at the first metatarsophalangeal joint.
- Pes planus or flat feet involves flattening of the medial longitudinal arch.
- Pes cavus or clawfoot is the opposite of flat feet, with a highly arched longitudinal foot.
- Talipes equinovarus or congenital clubfoot is a foot deformity where the feet are permanently inverted and plantar flexed.
- Metatarsal stress fractures are small cracks in the outer surface of the metatarsals.
