Adaptation Model of Nursing by Sister Callista Roy
- Sister Callista Roy, a nun and American nurse, developed a nursing theory focusing on adaptation.
- Her theory defines nursing as the provision of care, viewing individuals as complex systems adapting to stimuli.
- The individual is a set of interconnected biological, psychological, and social systems.
- These systems work to maintain a balance with external stimuli.
Biography of Sister Callista Roy
- Born in 1939 in Los Angeles.
- Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet.
- Earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in nursing from Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles.
- Earned a Master's Degree in Pediatric Nursing in 1996 from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)
- Earned a Master's degree in Sociology in 1973 and a Doctorate in Sociology in 1977.
Internal Processes
- Regulator Subsystem: A person's physiological coping mechanism. The body adjusts through neurochemical and endocrine processes.
- Cognator Subsystem: A person's mental coping mechanism. This involves self-concept, interdependence, and role functions.
Four Adaptive Modes
- Physiological: Physical health and functions.
- Self-Concept: Beliefs and feelings about oneself.
- Role Function: Role in society.
- Interdependence: Relationships and interactions with others.
Levels of Adaptation
- Integrated Process: Stable processes like breathing, spiritual growth, and healthy relationships, where the individual meets environmental needs.
- Compensatory Process: The individual's coping mechanisms are challenged, but are trying to meet environmental needs. Examples include grief, a new job, and adapting to a new situation.
- Compromised Process: The individual's systems are not adequately adapting to the environment. Examples include unresolved loss, hypoxia, and abusive relationships.
Nursing Process in Roy Adaptation Model
- Assessment of Behavior: Observe patient behavior for each of the four modes to determine adaptation effectiveness.
- Assessment of Stimuli: Identify focal, contextual, and residual factors (influences) on patient behavior.
- Nursing Diagnosis: Describe ineffective behaviors and the influences leading to those problems.
- Goal Setting: Collaboratively develop realistic and attainable goals to improve ineffective behaviors.
- Intervention: Together with the patient, modify stimuli ("doing" phase) to create healthier habits.
- Evaluation: Assess change in behavior and revise interventions as needed.
Metaparadigm in Nursing
- Person: Biopsychosocial being constantly interacting with a changing environment.
- Environment: Conditions, circumstances, and influences surrounding and affecting the individual.
- Health: A continuum encompassing various states between health and illness.
- Nursing: Expanding adaptive abilities and enhancing person-environment transformation.
