Soldier For Life-Transition Assistance Program (SFL-TAP) Overview
- SFL-TAP supports military members transitioning to civilian life and ensures they have the necessary skills and confidence for success.
- Formerly known as the Army Career & Alumni Program (ACAP).
- Aims to provide benefits counseling and employment assistance for informed decision-making.
Timing for Participation
- Early initiation of the SFL-TAP process is encouraged for better preparedness.
- Soldiers nearing retirement (20+ years of service) should start SFL-TAP 24 months before retirement.
- Soldiers with less service should begin SFL-TAP at least 12 months (preferably 18 months) before ETS or separation.
- Unplanned separations should prompt immediate contact with SFL-TAP.
Eligibility for Spouses
- Spouses of military members are eligible to participate in the SFL-TAP program.
Getting Started with SFL-TAP
- Contact the SFL-TAP Office or call 467-3312 to schedule an appointment with a counselor.
- Online initiation of the process is available for those who cannot attend in person.
Mandatory Transition Requirements
- Pre-separation Counseling & Initial Counseling: Introduces transition requirements, timelines, and services; participants complete a Pre-Separation Counseling Checklist (DD Form 2648).
- Individual Transition Plan (ITP): A personalized plan developed during Initial Counseling, outlining post-military goals; it evolves throughout transition preparation and is reviewed by a counselor and commander.

TAP Workshops: Recommended to complete over a few months, but can be done in 5 days if time-constrained; includes:
- Transition Overview: 2-hour briefing to prepare participants for the transition.
- MOC Crosswalk/Gap Analysis: Identifies alignments between military experience and civilian occupations.
- Financial Planning Seminar/12-month Budget: 5-hour workshop on financial responsibilities post-transition; topics include credit reports, retirement, health insurance, and budgeting.
- VA Benefits Briefings I & II: Covers healthcare, education, home loans, and disability compensation.
- Department of Labor Employment Workshop (DOLEW): 3-day workshop focusing on job search skills, resume writing, and labor market conditions.
- Individualized Assessment Tool: Helps assess career options.
- eBenefits Registration: Central hub for managing benefits and personal information.
- Continuum of Military Service Opportunity Counseling: Discuss options for continued military service with a Reserve Component Career Counselor.
