SFL TAP Overview
- SFL TAP (Soldier for Life - Transition Assistance Program) offers job assistance and separation counseling for Soldiers and their families transitioning from active duty.
- Governed by AR 600-81, which outlines program details and eligibility.
Eligibility Criteria
- SFL TAP assists transitioning Soldiers, DA Civilians, retirees, and family members of Soldiers.
- Available to Active Duty (AC) and Reserve Component (RC) personnel who have completed 180 days of continuous service, including those medically separated or retired.
Transition Timeline
- Retirees should begin the process 24-12 months before retirement, registering on the eBenefits website for pre-counseling and transition planning.
- Non-retirees should start the process 18-12 months before separation.
- A series of workshops and briefings are scheduled from 15-4 months prior to separation, including:
- 15-12 months: Cross walk, GAP, identity cert., and license requirements.
- 12-9 months: DOL Employment Workshop and issuance of DOL Gold Card.
- 9-6 months: VA Briefings 1 & 2.
- 6-5 months: Resume preparation.
- 5-4 months: Post-separation budgeting.
- No later than 3 months before separation: DD2958 (Capstone).
Program Regulations
- Participation in SFL TAP is mandatory for all eligible personnel.
- The program can be initiated 2 years before retirement and 18 months prior to separation, in accordance with the National Defense Act and The John McCain Act.
