Hypersensitivity Types
- Hypersensitivity type I is IgE mediated.
- Type I response involves mast cells, eosinophils, and basophils.
- Type I leads to the release of histamine.
- Type II is also known as cytotoxic or cytolytic, caused by antibody-dependent cytotoxicity.
- Type II involves complement proteins, ABO and Rh antigens, and antibodies.
- Type III is immune complex mediated.
- Type III involves complement proteins, macrophages, and neutrophils.
- Type IV is cell mediated and is also known as delayed hypersensitivity.
- Type IV involves T helper cells, T killer cells, and macrophages.
- Type IV is the only hypersensitivity type not involving antibodies.
Hypersensitivity Comparison
- Type I is the most rapid response, occurring within 15 to 30 minutes.
- Type II and III hypersensitivity also have a rapid response time, in the 15-30 minute range.
- Type IV has the slowest response, taking 3 to 10 hours.
