Sensitivity to Sound
- Increased sensitivity to sound can occur due to various medical conditions, trauma, or exposure to loud sounds.
- Conditions linked to increased sensitivity to sound include Bell's palsy, Lyme disease, Ramsay Hunt syndrome, depression, PTSD, Williams syndrome, Meniere's disease, stroke, stapedectomy, perilymph fistula, multiple sclerosis, autism spectrum disorders, and chronic fatigue syndrome.
The Facial Nerve
- The facial nerve (cranial nerve VII) is responsible for controlling facial expressions and the stapedial reflex.
- The stapedial reflex minimizes sound intensity, and damage to the facial nerve can disrupt this reflex, leading to increased sensitivity to sound.
- The facial nerve can be damaged due to various reasons, including head trauma, surgery, and inflammation.
Causes of Increased Sensitivity
- Exposure to loud sounds, either suddenly or over time, can lead to increased sensitivity to sound.
- Psychological issues related to trauma or loud noise can contribute to increased sensitivity.
- Stress, anxiety, and fatigue can also increase sensitivity to sound by altering the release and response of biochemicals.
Characteristics of Sound Sensitivity
- People with increased sensitivity to sound may perceive normal-volume sounds as extremely loud or excruciating.
- Sound sensitivity can occur despite normal hearing abilities.
