Security Specialist Responsibilities
- Security Specialists handle all calls received in the monitor base
- They identify themselves and the department they’re calling from.
- They must answer the emergency line "5555" immediately.
- They take messages and dispatch officers as needed.
- They ensure all equipment in the CCTV system, including cameras, radios, monitors, access control systems, and phone systems, are functional.
Daily Activity Documentation
- The security specialist documents all daily activity.
- Documentation includes the time the request was received, the time security arrived, the time the request was completed, the name of the requester, the nature of the request, the location of the request, and the security officers assigned to complete the task.
Hospital Patrol
- Security specialists ensure contract security personnel sign in and out for their shift.
- They verify with the Hospital Patrol officer the post the contract officer will be assigned to.
Pastoral Care
- Security Specialists coordinate pastoral care services upon request.
- They ensure the nursing staff and social workers have completed the proper form.

- A Level 1 Security Officer and/or contract security officer is assigned to guard the patient.
- The assigned officer is provided with an EDO packet, which includes a 15-minute observation form, a copy of the EDO application, an information tracking form, a patients’ rights form, and an EDO Information form.
- Security personnel conduct a search for any contraband or property that may be a risk to staff and patient safety.
- They coordinate with the charge nurse to remove ligature risks.
- They secure the patient's belongings and valuables.
- Security personnel read the patient their rights and complete the Patients’ Rights form.
- They round on Level 1 Security officers and contract security personnel to ensure documentation is completed correctly.
- They contact the Mental Health Office to inform them of any patients who have been placed on a Protective Custody Order (PCO) and have been transferred, discharged, or signed off.
Emergency Room Post Officer
- The officer assigned to the Emergency Room Post (ERP) controls and prevents prohibited items from entering the Emergency Department.
- They utilize a metal detector or hand-held portable metal wand to perform this task.
- They ensure all equipment is accounted for, including the computer, printer, fax machine, radios, property safe, and Active Threat response kit.
- They maintain adequate inventory and copies of documentation for EDO/PCO packets, Forensic Orientation forms, valuable and sharps envelopes, and all other necessary documentation.
- The ERP officer ensures the emergency department waiting area is free of loiters and solicitors.
Level 1 Security Personnel
- Level 1 Security personnel are assigned to patients admitted on an Emergency Detention Order (EDO) or Protective Custody Order (PCO).
- They guard and transport behavioral health patients as needed.
- They complete a 15-minute observation form for each patient on an EDO/PCO.
- They ensure a copy of the EDO and/or PCO and/or Certified Medical Evaluation (CME) is in the packet.
- They complete an information tracking form for any visitor, staff member, and physician who enters the patient's room.
- They ensure the patient's room is free of ligature risks.
- They ensure the patient has been read their patient rights and that the form is completed.
- They complete the EDO/PCO Information Form and return it to the Security Operations Manager once the patient has been discharged or transferred.
- They place all documentation into the patient's chart after discharge or transfer, except for the EDO/PCO Information Form.
- They notify the monitor base when a patient on an EDO/PCO has been discharged, transferred, or signed off.
All Security Personnel
- Security personnel respond to a Level 1 ambulance arrival by providing traffic and crowd control.
- Security personnel complete a 15-minute observation form for each patient on an EDO/PCO.
Security Supervisors
- The Security Supervisor assigned to the shift ensures each shift is staffed accordingly and monitors overtime and contract labor services.
- The shift supervisor ensures the following posts are staffed:
- Monitor base – 24/7 post (Security Specialist/Supervisor only)
- Hospital Patrol – 24/7 post (Security Specialist/Supervisor only)
