Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Inspection and Functional Testing
- SCBA is used in hazardous atmospheres or when the atmosphere may become hazardous
- Visual inspections include checking for damage, deterioration, and cleanliness of components
- Inspections of face piece, regulator, pressure reducer, cylinder and valve assembly, and carrier assembly are required
- Functional tests involve checking the ability of the regulator and face piece to hold negative pressure
- The LED display on the regulator should illuminate in a sequenced pattern
- Air flow from the regulator and proper attachment to the face piece must be ensured
- The regulator should not produce unusual sounds such as whistling, chattering, or popping
- SCBA should not be used if negative pressure cannot be maintained in the face piece
- If any component is damaged, missing, or not functioning properly, the SCBA should be removed from service
- Carbon-wrapped cylinders must undergo hydrostatic testing every five years
- The SCBA should be used in conjunction with appropriate PPE in confined spaces or IDLH atmospheres
