SCBA and Integrated PASS Device Use
- The Hoffman Estates Fire Department mandates the use of SCBAs with integrated PASS devices in areas with hazardous or oxygen-deficient atmospheres.
- SCBAs must be used by all personnel in areas where the atmosphere is:
- Hazardous
- Suspected of being hazardous
- May rapidly become hazardous
- SCBAs are required for personnel working below ground level or inside a confined space unless the atmosphere can be established and maintained as safe.
Safe Atmosphere Conditions
- An atmosphere is considered safe if it meets the following NIOSH permissible exposure limits:
- O2 Level: not below 19.5% or greater than 23.5%
- CO Level: not greater than 35 parts per million
- H2S: not greater than 10 parts per million
- HCN: not greater than 4.7 parts per million
SCBA Operations and Training
- Members using SCBAs must operate in teams of two or more, maintaining close proximity and communication.
- At least one member of the NIMS group is responsible for monitoring personnel using SCBAs, their location, and function.
- All personnel must be thoroughly trained in SCBA use, care, and maintenance, meeting minimum requirements set by the Training Officer.
