Study Notes
Renal Vascular Disease is a condition where blood vessels leading to your kidney become narrowed or blocked. It can cause high blood pressure, kidney failure, kidney transplant rejection, stroke, heart attack, angina chest pain, poor circulation, intermittent claudication, gangrene of limbs, discoloration of fingers and toes, impotence, increased hair growth, cold feet, leg ulcers, skin grafts, eye damage, dizziness or fainting when standing, severe abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, weight loss, fatigue, anxiety, irritability, depression, confusion, muscle weakness or spasms, numbness or tingling sensation in the legs. Symptoms may vary from person to person depending on their age and health conditions.
The primary causes of renal vascular diseases are hypertension, diabetes mellitus, aging, cholesterol disorders, smoking, obesity, stress, excessive alcohol consumption, and certain medications like steroids, beta blockers, vasodilators, and antihistamines.
Diagnosis includes physical examination, Ultrasound scan (US), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with contrast injection, Doppler ultrasound scan, cerebral artery angiography, carotid duplex scanning, digital subtraction angiography, computed tomographic angiography (CTA), arterial puncture, and arteriotomy-angioplasty. These tests help determine if an individual has any kind of obstruction in his or her arteries. A normal result means that there isn't any problem with blood flow through the arteries; if the test shows something wrong, it could indicate that the patient needs treatment.
Complications associated with this disorder range from mild to serious conditions such as hypertensive retinopathy, neuropathy, peripheral artery disease, stroke, myocardial infarction, peripheral occlusive disease, thromboembolism, intracranial hemorrhage, and lower-extremity revascularization. Early detection and proper management decrease further morbidities in patients suffering from chronic kidney diseases caused by renal vascular disorders.
